I made a thread over on the Modern Vespa forum about buying the BV 350 without test driving it first because if I got it from my local dealer, I would not be able to. I started calling around to other Vespa dealers within an hour or two drive from here to see if any of them would let me test drive a 350. I talked with the guy at Vespa Orlando for a little bit and he said that they sell out of the BV 350s really quick and that it's proving to be a really good scooter with lots of demand. He literally just sold the last one 15 minutes before I called and said it will be 1 - 2 weeks before another shipment (I think he said of 3) would be coming in. He said it would be totally fine for me to take one out for a test drive. He got my name and number and everything and will call me when they come in. Then he threw a wrench at me. The guy that just bought the last BV 350 had traded in his BV 250. The Vespa dealer said that this guy is a regular customer who trades his scooter in about every 3 years, takes real good care of it (waxes it every month and everything) and is only at 3,800 miles. They're closed tomorrow, and he said he'd hold off listing it for sale until mid-day Tuesday when they reopen, but he expects it to sell really fast. He quoted me $3800 out the door. Also, strangely enough, going from my Chinese 150cc to the Piaggio 250cc will decrease my yearly insurance premium by $16. I had expected it to go up. I did a quote for the 350 while I was at it, and it increase by $48 (so a $64 difference between the two, not a big deal imo). Here are a few pictures the dealer e-mailed me. I'm a little torn. Honestly, I think the 250 would be perfect for me if I were the only one riding it. However, it would be nice to have a little more power and comfort for slightly longer drive with 2 people. I'd really like to be able to, for example, hop on the scooter with my wife and drive the 1.5 hours it takes to get to the beach or just be able to take a weekend, go drive out to the middle of nowhere and go camping and come back the next day or whatever. The 350 would definitely open more doors for that sort of thing. I also really like the 350s extended maintenance intervals. Really, the only reason I'd consider this 250 over the 350 is cost.

how much more is the 350 over this one and if you want to take weekend trips and all you may want to wait to get the 350 Well, the 350 would be new and the MSRP on it is $5700. Not sure what the out the door price would be, but just adding sales tax (6% here) would bring it up to $6,042. Plus, with Vespas and Piaggios the dealer doesn't just fold the shipping costs into the sale price, so we'd have to add that on. Plus registration and everything and it's safe to assume it'd probably be $6,500ish. So we're talking a sizeable price difference. I'd really like the BV 350, but I am going to need a new vehicle fairly soon. Not immediately, but within the next couple of months most likely. My chinese scooter is running fine now, but I need something that I know I can count on to be reliable now that I have a full time job and commute around 25 miles per day. My worst fear is making it about halfway to work in the morning and my scooter dying on me. I also need it to be a scooter because there is nowhere to park my car at work. I work at the university, and the closest car parking is a parking garage and a decal to park there costs roughly $1200 per year. The next closest car parking is about a half mile walk. However, the closest scooter parking is literally right outside the entrance and a scooter decal is $150 per year.

My BV200 supposedly can hit 70+ mph. I haven't gone past 55 on it. Before I was legal, my Harley friend who is larger than me took it at something fast that he wouldn't tell me details. Yes, I'd asked him to do some faster speeds as all I could do in our private-streets neighbourhood was up to 40-ish (just not enough road length for faster). So my smaller scooter handled his greater weight at something fast enough he wouldn't tell me about it. Make your own assumptions here, but I would say the 250 would be fine for your occasional two-up. Unless one or the other (or both) of you is quite large.

howdy, i have the bv350 and took a little day trip with a fellow on a bv250. we are both man sized but either scoot works well. the 350 does look better and the tail trunk i added is keyed to the ignition and removes from the rack with that same key which is nice. both are nimble but the 350 is definitely faster. i have had it to indicated. what sold me on it was the long service intervals which will mostly give you a full season of riding. i have 1400 miles on it and am planning some long trips this summer. if planning to keep a scoot a long time and had the money, i'd definitely go with the 350. i don't have a tach but it seems to spin pretty fast so might have gearing up possibilities. lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Basically the same 250 engine as an Aprilia Sport City 250 which new is still less than the price he is quoting you for the used BV250. I would offer $2,800 and settle for somewhere below $3,200.
The BV350 is an entirely new engine package with a boxed stroke, automatic wet clutch and the torque of a 400cc + bike that gets the fuel economy of a 250 so they do command a premium however at the same time that advancement devaluates the older technology of the BV250 especially when talking used.

i like the 250 deal. get it at a somewhat better price, even a few hundred dollars off is 10%, give or take. so say a savings of $3000+ off the 350. bank the savings whether you get a loan or are paying cash. you can then save a bit more, or with a lower mileage BV250 on hand sell it later for say....$2500 give or take and add it to your savings and buy more scooter. or save the $3000 for upkeep of the 250. w/e you want to do but $3000+ saved just sounds good to me
if you're good at say 70mph with your wife on board should be ok. i mean it will go faster depending, but if that is a good cruising speed for you, great. many on the highway do not expect bikes with 2 up to be blazing trails, anyway. so i think cruising along at a reasonable clip like that would be fine 2 up
investigate the Modern Vespa forums and the wider web about the BV250 top end in general. pretty sure a complete picture will come to mind. and since top end is important to you two up you'll want to be sure it can meet your demands and road conditions again and again concerning top end.
oh, and its an OKAY deal. i would, as the above poster said, try to get it for somewhat less to make it a truly GOOD deal for YOU. as said, ask around the 'net at forums familiar with the scoot and its value

DX I had a 2006 bv250 (new), then a new 2006 bv500- each was great- both were very stable @ 75 on the interstate. 250 got better mpg. Both designed & made very well. K Wayne.
