Hey guys, I thought I had the problem solved by simply buying a new belt, but when I ran the engine with the CVT cover off, I found there's noise without the belt hitting the CVT cover. I'm a total newbie when it comes to CVTs, so help diagnosing is much appreciated. What is that chatter that I hear? This is a 2012 Taotao ATM150-A Evo 150cc.
Here's the video of the CVT in action:

I don't have a whole lot of experience with CVT's but do you think that you could have the wrong sizes belt? It seems to be flopping around a little bit too much.

The wrong size would be loose when its just sitting there. Check and see if the rear spring is broken. Have you changed roller weights or anything?

What size is the belt it appears to be to long or it has stretched quite a bit. When it climbs on the variator and it is down on the Clutch pulley notice how it sags at the bottom Get the next size down.
Is the belt 835-20-30 Alleyoop

why is that washer bouncing around on the kick stand bolt (whatever it's called). i don't know anything about these scooters but that appears to be the rattle you are hearing.
check out this vid:
his is locked in place.
edit: meh, idk. after looking at again, i doubt that is the cause of all that rattle but it shouldn't move, should it?

[replyingto=ramblinman]ramblinman[/replyingto]Hey guys. Everything is stock, belt is 835-20-30 and it's the original belt. Only 1,100 miles on the bike. I saw that spacer moving around too, but that's not the source of the noise. I'll be sure to check the clutch spring. Any other ideas? Thanks.

If it was me, I'd take both pulleys off and thoroughly look for anything unusual. I guess it could be possible that it's a junk belt period. Other than that I'm not too sure. What else do we have to work with besides the belt and 2 pulleys(shafts?)? Maybe work the shafts around a bit. How long do you think this has been going on? Do you have another belt to try anyway?
I've read about belt slap before on the other forum I think, not sure if it's related or not. I mean your belt is all over the place.

If the belt is worn down width wise it will drop down really deep in the Clutch pulley and really slap around. the other thing would be a weak CONTRA SPRING not putting enough pressure on the belt so it does not go down to deep. Alleyoop

Hey guys, thanks for all of the suggestions. A random check of fasteners on the bike revealed the main cause of chatter--a bolt that fastens the tail pipe to the swing arm (see attached photo). After tightening that, the noise went away. That still doesn't solve the wildly flapping CVT belt, so I'll swap the OEM belt out for a Gates Powerlink. I'll report back what I find. Attachments:
