so today I sanded down all the plastic parts on my scooter to repaint. I went to the local hardware store and specifically asked for plastic primer from krylon. employee brought me back a multi purpose indoor/outdoor krylon primer and insisted it was the product I needed. I come home lay down a base coat of primer, look at the back of the can and don't see plastic mentioned as one of the options I may use this on (Wood, Metal, Wicker, Glass, Plaster, Ceramic, Fabric, Paper, Paper Mache). I check out the KRYLON Website and see that there is a seperate product for Krylon Plastic Primer all together. I'm both enraged and scared that I may have ruined the parts of this elite scooter. Did I just potentially do something really bad to the scooter by using a multi purpose primer, or is it OK for me to use one base coat and then 2-3 coats of the actual Plastic Primer as well?? should I try to remove the multi purpose primer at this point? if so, by sanding down or buying a paint thinne/etc any ideas? or is it OK to continue with this kind of primer, maybe I can do some extra coats and then finish it out with krylon plastic paint, and clear gloss finish Here is what I was given: www.krylon.com/products/indooroutdoor_primer/VS: What I Actually Need. www.krylon.com/products/indooroutdoor_plastic_primer/HELP PLEASE!!

if you have just a light coat on there take a small piece and try to scrap the primer off if it holds good then you should be fine if it comes off easy then you will need to remove it before you go any farther if you need to remove the primer try which ever method on a small piece to make sure it does not hurt the plastics

Yeah, I would not loose a lot of sleep over it. If the primer does not stick you can probably take it to a hand car wash and use the high pressure hose to blast it all off.
If it holds good, just paint over it.

I only did one coat with the multi purpose primer. it looks like it is sticking. At this point, should I continue to use the same primer (was lookin to do at least 3 coats), or should I sand it all down and try to start from scratch??

I'm no authority on painting but if its just one quick light coat I would try to sand most of it down and use the plastic stuff... the plastic stuff may be more suitable for bendy plastic...

When I painted my scooter I just used single stage automotive paint in a spray gun. Never primed it, just scuffed the stuff that was one there. Has held up great over a year now.

Primer is used to cover bare metal before painting , you really dont need it on plastic , i wouldnt try washing the primer off with thinner because some thinners could soften the plastic . Best advice is sand it down with nothing less than 320 grit it would be better if you use 400 or finer so you wont see sanding scratches . Prep is % of a good paint job so make sure you have a smooth and clean finish before you ever apply paint .

what I ended up doing is re-sanding it down with 320, wash/dry, and applied a heavier coat of plastic primer over the existing base coat. so far it seems to have sticked to the plastic. thanks for the help guys
