Hello, It's been about 3 years since i rebuild the scooter engine, and i thought i'll update you. Before that, just a quick reminder. This scooter is a SYM 125cc air cooled. The scooter reached 115,000 KM (around 71,000 miles) with the original engine. I decided to do a rebuild since it started to burn a lot of oil. Here is a link to the post i opened back then: itistheride.boards.net/thread/7165/sym-125cc-rebuilding-engine (pictures of the rebuild on page 3.) Anyhow, 3 years later, and i'm now almost at 150,000 KM (about 93000 miles). Engine working ok. Oil consumption is now around 120ml (4 oz) every 1000KM (600 miles). Pretty good. I hope i'll reach 200K KM on it. I'll take some pictures of the scooter tomorrow, and i'll upload them.

How'd you deal with the cylinder on the rebuild? And what rings did you use? I'm surprised the oil consumption is so low,,,,

Thank you for the replies. Sorry, forgot about taking photos of the scooter today. I'll do it tomorrow. Good Work!! What brand and type of Oil do you use and how often do you change it? When the scooter was new up until around 100k KM (62,000 miles), i used "Motul 10w40 semi synthetic oil". After that, the oil consumption increased a lot (reached up to almost 1 quart every 1000km/600 miles), so i switched to a much cheaper oil called "Castrol Power 1 10w40 semi synthetic". I kept using the Castrol oil also after the engine rebuild. It's also a good oil, and price is better. I always do an oil change every 4000km (2500 miles), but i do add some oil about every 2000km (1200 miles). How'd you deal with the cylinder on the rebuild? And what rings did you use? I'm surprised the oil consumption is so low,,,, I installed a new genuine SYM cylinder. I used a new set of genuine SYM rings.

Is the 4000km or 2,500 mile oil change the mfg's. recommend interval? Well actually, from what i understand from the user manual of the scooter, the manufacturer recommend to use a mineral oil, so the manufacturer says to replace oil every 1000KM. The SYM importer here, recommend to use a semi-synthetic oil, which from what i understand is a mineral oil with additives. So maybe the semi-synthetic oil has a longer life in the engine, and because of that they recommend an oil change every 4000KM. Also, where i live, i think nobody will buy a scooter if they knew they will need to change oil every 1000KM.

A photo of the scooter: A photo of the Odometer. Since the odometer has only 5 figures, it reads 49313 km, but it actually 149,313 km. This is the second round of the odometer. It started from zero again after it reached 99,999 km.

That's awesome! Good to hear you're getting such a long engine life out of it.

It's a sym piston,,,completely different animal Ok I see a Plated Cylinder thats it.. anything else? So at 22,000 miles since top end build she drinks like half the crankcase oil in 600 miles, I'm not impressed. So at 11,000 was she drinking 25% of the crank case? Wonder what could be done with a high end oil and oil changes when they were supposed to be done.

So it's only around 13% of oil consumption from the entire crankcase oil amount.

Ok I was just winging the thing so I stand corrected. So then again go ahead and correct me again at the regular service interval of 1,000 miles she is gulping upward of 20% of the cranks oil. This is indicative of using poor quality low cost lubricants and the lack of regular scheduled maintenance. Also to the oil consumption is I can see you did not properly prepare the cylinder for installation..
I think the GY is a pretty tuff cookie design, very similar to basic xr's or lay down ct design, solid bullet proof, and the milage your putting on one with such little investment. I think thats still awesome

The Manufacturer interval is 1000KM (not miles). so it's only burn around 13% from the entire oil amount, when it reach the 1000 KM manufacturer interval. The Castrol oil brand that i use is a very known brand as far as i know. It also supposed to be for motorcycles. It costs less than the Motul oil, but i don't think it's a poor quality oil. Maybe it's not the best, but i think far away from poor quality. Also, when the scooter was new with about the same mileage (that i have now after the rebuild), and i used the Motul oil brand, the oil consumption was about the same as now. Can you explain about the cylinder installation? These little engines from SYM,KYMCO will keep running as long as there is oil and fuel in it.
