My Tao Tao 50 when I first got it ran fine, but when I rode to work, after about 45 minutes into the ride the engine would cut off when I went idle and I couldn't get it started and had to sit for like 5 minutes before it would start again. Then it just wouldn't start. At first the engine would crank but not start then the engine wouldn't even crank anymore. I believe it has something to do with the cold weather but I'm not sure which steps to take. I heard it might be a problem with the bendix, but I don't know where that is.

pull the spark plug and check for compression.
did it cut out on you while running or just a no start one day?
The bendix is good otherwise the fan would not spin.

check for spark check the valves and check the fuel
but it looks to me like that motor is spinning way to freely makes me think you have no compression

Im not home at the moment so i cant check. But at first it was giving me idling problems and i had to keep the gas going while at a light. Then 1 night after work it just wouldnt start and i had to get a ride home. How do i go about checking for compression?.

I assume it’s a four stroke ,,, valves may need an adjustment badly,, it’s turning over ok but as it’s been mentioned seems like little compression,,, #1 check the oil level,,, if that is good go to,,, #2 I’d be looking at a valve adjustment

I'll have to get feeler gauges Cut a strip from the side of an aluminum beverage can.

I tried to get some work done before I had to leave for work. I checked the valves and they seemed to be okay(I think any way.) After I put the cover back on and tried to start it again it was cranking and not free spinning, I persisted a bit and it actually started and ran for a few seconds before dying, and it went back to free spinning. It feels like I had compression but then suddenly lost it again. I'm not sure what I could have done when I took the valve cover off and adjusted the timing. It's like I made progress and then fell back to square one. This me sliding the feeler gauge. I didn't make any adjustments because based on videos I watched it doesn't seem too loose or too tight. This is me trying to start it. Not the successful start, I didn't record it because I wasn't expecting it to start. This is the feeler gauge I used. I also noticed these two things that look like they should be connected to something but are not And these are pictures of the valves at various angles for anyone with a more discerning eye Why would it go from free spinning to cranking, then hesitantly start, idle for a few seconds before dying, then go back to free spinning, and what did I do while looking at the valves? I feel I should also mention I did remove the spark plug to check if I was getting spark I touched it against my rench and tried to start and felt the tingling sensation. That means I have spark right? I also put my finger over the spark plug socket to see if I got any suction, and I did. So far from what I'm understanding. I got compression, but it just can't keep it?

your going to need to pull the head so you can inspect the cylinder wall and the valve faces for pitting or scoring so order a new head gasket or just get an entire new head for 40$ a new cylinder and piston can also be purchased for about 40$ or get the hole deal for about 60$

Check clearances after jamb nut is tight, if the gauge dont slide easily, re try it.

If it was me, I’d take off the CVT cover (kickstart cover) and see what else you’ll need in there, too, since it’s “jammed”. I like having a functional kickstarter in case it doesn’t electric start, especially if you depend on that scooter to take you where you need to go. Also, I like to order everything I need all at once.
***The starter turns the bendix, and you’ll see the bendix with the CVT cover off.
