Hey Rebs & Rebettes...
I recently thought about the fact that my original valve-stems are now 5 years old...
They have ALWAYS leaked a little, and I know they're prone to breaking. Because of this, I originally encased them in industrial epoxy. They lasted until now, but are starting to disintegrate.
I also just saw a post on SD from a fellow from my own home town (Grapevine, TX) who had his front valve come apart at speed! His looked OK, but the brass angled-tube simply blew out of the rubber!
I replaced my front one today, and sure enough, I could pull the brass part out with my fingers! Whew, THAT could get exciting!
I opted to use the "bolt-down" stems rather than the "pull-through" rubber ones. They just seem a LOT more durable. I ran out of daylight before I could do the rear, but I'm not going to ride again until they're both replaced.
All you need is a big "C-clamp" to do the job. Lots of "how-to's" available on the net, and on our sites. It's cheap, easy "health-insurance"...
Ride safe, CHANGE THOSE VALVE-STEMS!

WOW!Those super-low, flat-angled ones are SWEET!!! A little pricey, but the quality AND easy-fill access makes them worth it for sure! I think a lot of scooter-jockeys will be getting these! Thanks for the heads-up! Leo in Texas

[replyingto=oldchopperguy]oldchopperguy[/replyingto] Thanks my Friend. I've been having to put air in my tires everyday. A quick check found the stem to be cracked and leaking. Ordered 2 stems from kurveygirl.

Valve stems should be replaced with the tires and tires are only safe for 5 years so for many of us we should be changing the stems every 1 to 2 years when the tires wear out and for the rest they should be changed along with the tires once they are 5 years old or when they show signs of cracking or fatigue during your regular tire pressure checks.
This has been the rule for the past 50 years that I can remember.
Personally I commute with my bike and ride daily so I go through a set of tires and valve stems annually.
It is all part of maintainance along with flushing the coolant and brake fluid every 2 years at the least.

Whats bad is it says in my manual that came with my scoot to change the valve stems asap that they are not good and can leak. That is a good one to put in the manual for you to see right after getting your scoot

[replyingto=oldchopperguy]oldchopperguy[/replyingto]Thanks for that heads-up! I just ordered a set of michelins for the new scooter. Valve stems never crossed my mind--- until now. I did the epoxy thing too on my old scoot, works good. While the rubber is off the rims. I am now going to replace the stems too.
Regards, Jack
