Just purchased the Tao Tao Powermax VIP 150cc 157QMJ and getting her broke in. I want to have this scooter run a smooth low rpm 60 mph (GPS) and top out at 70 mph (GPS). I want to leave the motor alone and work around gears/tires/variator setups to achieve my goal. I will do the regular plug change coil cdi and synthetic oil after break in. So far she is great. I have shown 58 mph (GPS) on a slight decline tucked and grinning. I can feel the power starting to come in with the break in right now. I am using Rotella 15/40 diesel oil in the crank case and Valvoline 75/ gear oil. I will use synthetic and an once or less Lucas Oil Stabilizer after break in. I have been looking into tires and see I have 120/70/12 stock and plan on 140/70/12 or 155/80/12 car tire (Yes the dark side). Chime in and lets have some fun. Heedehcheenuh Chuck D Ride on.....

Changed the plug to the NGK and she runs a little stronger. Rode her Weds. on a 19 mile round trip and she made me sore a little for a day or two. But that is me not the bike. So my plans now are to get her broke in and find the gear ratio i want 15-16-17/36 to get the top speed needed. I want to keep the motor stock until time for a rebuild but will do the variator/belt/plug(Iridium)/exhaust/gear and cold air intake. Just get those gears first the tweak the variator to that sweet spot I need.
My old butt needs to get out and ride to get her broke in good.

Latest update. She is running fine. Found the tires needed to help the top speed 110/ /12 Michelin City Grips. Front tire but will use front and rear. The gears i have yet to decide on but getting to the selection will be fun. I want to have the gears/tires set up to get the motor in the sweet spot power range. then adjust variator weight rollers/sliders so i can ride around 6500-7500 rpm 55-60 mph (GPS). Currently she runs: 2500-3000 rpm for take off 4000-5000 rpm for 25-35 mph (GPS) 8000-9000 rpm for 50-60 mph (GPS) My 60 mph run was done tucked and grinning lol. Chinese speedo showed 65-70 mph and i know that was not right. lol Wife followed me and she said she was running 56 mph and my gps showed 53 mph. (2013 Dodge Dart and it just could keep up with me lol j/k) Chime in and have fun... Heedehcheenuh Chuck D Ride on.....

I am legit now and rolling legal. Tags registration 1yr permit and insurance. Now I have to get a belt. Chinese belt could not hang with my heavy fist lol Muffler on the way also. That crack has me changing it before anything breaks. Even in the rain today she ran like a VIP Champ lol Not a Future Champ. I am so enjoying this. I was still at the DMV when the drizzle started and told myself to ride it like you stole it.

I had the lancer 150 limited edition for about two years, and loved it. I prefer a sportbike stance when riding so switched to a taotao racer 50 with a bbk and cvt tunning.

you mentioned gears in one of your posts. do you mean the final drive gears? if so, where are you going to get custom gears?

OK changing belt and counted clutch 8.3 turns to 1 on tire. Any guess as to what gears my be behind the cover? Do not want to change them yet. Belt was fine also. Found 1 exhaust nut fell off driving home in the rain the other day smh. I will put the gates belt on and find a new exhaust nut to put on (Call my scooter repair cousin) so I can burn up the road. New Gates belt on and nut on exhaust. She is smooth as can be. New exhaust will be here Tuesday as well as GPS speedometer and mounting pod for it. Best loose change I have spent so far. 15/38 gears are next and let her ride. Tires will go from 120/70-12 to 110/ -12 to also give me the top speed needed. The power should fall in the range I need. If not variator weights rollers/ sliders can do the rest. Heedehcheenuh Chuck D Ride on.....

OK changing belt and counted clutch 8.3 turns to 1 on tire. Any guess as to what gears my be behind the cover? . i'm not sure what you are asking here, but there are 3 shafts of gears in my ride. 1. the clutch shaft with 1 gear milled on the end. 2. the rear wheel shaft with 1 gear milled on the end. (see edit below) 3. a counter shaft with 2 gears, one engaging the clutch shaft, and a larger gear engaging the wheel shaft. there may also be shims on the countershaft gear, and these must go back where they came from. the countershaft gear can be separated into 2 gears, and i would imagine that either the large gear and the wheel shaft needs to be changed or the small gear and the clutch shaft needs changed. i've never altered the gear ratio of my ride, so i wouldn't really know what would be involved, but i have replaced final drive components so i DO know what's inside the final drive. my best guess would be the large countershaft gear and the wheel axle will need to be replaced to alter the gear ratio. if the tolerances aren't too close then this isn't going to be hard, but if they are, you might have some problems separating the 2 countershaft gears. EDIT EDIT EDIT: i'm not rewriting the above, but i just remembered that the wheel axle gear is a press fit instead of milled. this would imply that the large countershaft gear and the wheel gear would be changed to alter the gear ratio.

The 2 gears are replaceable and that is what I am trying to figure out with out pulling the gear box cover off. The chart for gears stock I think for mine is 13/40 (3.06) right now. She tops out at 53-60 mph GPS around 8500-9000 rpm. I want to lower the rpm down with the gear change then play with variator weight rollers / sliders to put the power at the sweet spot. I think the 15/38 (2.53) set will do me. After this if she holds the speed good I will let her be..If not then cold air intake CDI coil iridium plug may pep the power with out going BBK just yet. i also believe that you can't get something for nothing. you aren't increasing the power output of the engine by altering the gear ratio. IOW, you are going to have to sacrifice torque for speed. - my opinion.
