I forgot to post this earlier. this is what my CDI looks like, and I wasn't sure what the orange goo that is coming out of the seems is, I didn't know if it was just excess glue or a sign of a problem . . . thanks. Attachments:

okay, when I get home I'll make sure the valves are adjusted correctly by adjusting them while at TDC.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments.
I set the valves to .08mm, then someone told me they should be at .04mm, so i put them there, then someone told me they should be at .08 . . . sigh, either way, didn't work.
I tested the compression by taking out the spark plug, covering the hole with my finger, and trying to start it. air pressure pushed my finger off the hole.
The spark looks consistant, but i'm not really sure what it is supposed to look like. How would i test the timing?
i do not have deep pockets . . .:-(

Okay, so if I was going to get a new cdi, is there anything i should be careful of? looking through amazon i see that some say 50cc, 110cc, etc. do i need one which specifically says 100cc?

my previous thread may have died, so i'm starting a new one. you can find the old thread here: itistheride.boards.net/index.cgi?board=50ac&action=display&thread=2069&page=1Here's a new youtube video so you can hear what it sounds like when i try to start it: here's the deal: I have a 2009 Schwinn Sport 50. Last summer I added a 100cc big bore kit, and it worked for the rest of summer/fall. this spring I took it out and rode it for maybe a week, but now it won't start. things i've tried: I replaced spark plug (and confirmed that it sparks) I've confirmed that it has compression I've confirmed that the vacuum is opening the valve to let fuel into the carb. I've tried it with starting fluid, still nothing. I checked the valves, which seem to be adjusted correctly. not sure what else to do/look at . . . I'm learning as I go, so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks! Mitch

took out the sparkplug and covered hole with my finger. tried starting. sure enough, finger was blown off. I mean blown off the hole, my finger is still attached to my hand.
so I have compression, which means I have no idea what could be wrong. I didn't actually clean the carb. - but when i looked in it, it really did look clean. anyone have any ideas of what else could be wrong? it really isn't starting . .

Ok, well i adjusted them to .04, and unsurprisingly it still won't start. even with starting fluid. I triple checked the plug, and it definitely sparks and is in securely - so if i'm getting gas, and spark, why not running? the only other thing i think you need is compression - how does one go about testing that? I read on another site that you can just use your hand to push the kickstart - if you feel resistance than you probably have compression - but i don't know what else could be wrong. thanks guys.

Well, today i tried some starting fluid, which i sprayed directly into the intake. Nothing. which leads me to believe it is a spark/electric problem. what things should I look at? I tried the spark plug, grounding against the engine, and saw a spark - not sure how vigorous it is supposed to look though . . .

[replyingto=tvnacman]tvnacman[/replyingto]Okay, I opened it up and looked at the gaps on the valves. i was shooting for .08 mm (i hope that is right). One was fine but the other was too tight by a couple tenths of a millimetre.
After i did that i put it back together and actually got it to start. But now it still doesn't start great and seems like it will only start if I open the throttle all the way - which doesn't seem like something i should have to do . . .
the idle screw is almost all the way tightened (not sure if that is right, but after i did get it to start that is where i had to put it to keep it idling.) It idled for a good 5-10 min fine, but when i took it out for a spin around the neighbourhood, it stalled while idling three times.
I feel like i'm getting closer - any ideas from here?
thanks again!
-Mitch

[replyingto=tvnacman]tvnacman[/replyingto]Okay, i'll try more gas. I've ordered a feeler gauge from amazon, should get here tomorrow, so I can check the valves. also will need to get a torque wrench that does low torques so i can retorque the bolts.
