Always assume the worst from other drivers, the best advice to survive on the pavement jungle. Mostly the drivers are clueless. They go from hither to yon without noticing anything around them. They do not watch the road, they do not look over 5 seconds ahead, they barely manage to see cars and manage to stop before hitting. They tailgate others only because there is something in front of them. You can hope others to watch for motorcycles (or scooters) -- and they *will* hit you. Or you can watch everyone else and avoid them -- which is what has worked for me for 50 years.

by "savage", do you mean the Suzuki, or the 308? Seems either is appropriate here.. Pre-Retire I wore the same clothes riding as I worked -- black leather jacket when cold, t-shirt, black denim, black cowboy boots. And no one messed with me. Now I wear nicer jacket when cold, Hawaiian shirts, golf slacks, penny loafers. Altho' people still don't mess with me. But it could be that I don't notice. A guy said the way you need to ride -- "Zen fighter pilot." Ride calm, see everything, slip away and dodge others.

... I do live in a suburb outside of Los Angeles .... Doesn't say much, Las Vegas is a suburb of Los Angeles. City was built from money from Angelos. I am in LaLaLand also, the South Bay. I am insane and ride the freeways on a Vespa LX150. We have licensed dealers that sell Chinese Scoots, and will do the DMV crap for you.

ttp.aaa.com/TripTik/ -- can do "no highways", but I prefer to simply keep moving the route to non-freeway roads.

... I want the 50cc for Michigan's "mopeds don't require insurance, a title, a license plate or a helmet" .... Michigan Law: www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/mcl/pdf/mcl-act-300-of-1949.pdf257.32b “Moped” defined. "Moped" means a 2- or 3-wheeled vehicle to which both of the following apply: (a) It is equipped with a motor that does not exceed 100 cubic centimeters piston displacement and cannot propel the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on a level surface. (b) Its power drive system does not require the operator to shift gears Anything that can do 40 mph is a motorcycle. If a cop that didn't get any the night before catches you, depending on his attitude you will get a big ticket or he will call for a tow and impound the bike and you get to walk home. Get your motorcycle endorsement, get a 150cc scoot that can do 45 mph without strain.

... At what age do you become Young again ? .... Your "second childhood" is a lie. We are always children, but there is a time where we have to fake it. Mostly when you have to raise children and work to get money. When you are 4 or 5 years of age, you have to go to school and you are a slave to the clock Through school, career, you can take breaks but always have to go back and punch the clock. Until you retire. That is when you get to be as young as a toddler. (and you start being as wobbling as a toddler.)

cycle-ergo.com/ -- they have some scooters. I have an LX150, same size as the 50, and they show that I can flat foot with my 5'8" / 30" inseam. ...yeah... I can flat foot wearing my cowboy boots, not quite wearing penny loafers. Go on Craig's List, look at scooters, see what scooters you can fit.

The rims concern me also. The rims on the 150t are 13 inch. Some scoots come with 12 inch and 10 inch rims. The smaller tire size, means less speed. I knew this elderly gentleman whom rode his 150 scooter with 10 inch rims.... My Vespa has a 110/70-11 front and a 130/70-10 in the rear. At an indicated 72 mph I am doing 65 mph per my Smartphone's GPS speedometer. I have seen 76 mph indicated, eventually.

... There is not a big difference in 60 mph and 68 MPH. Depends on the speed of traffic. If traffic is doing 65 mph, the difference of 68 and 60 is the difference of keeping up with traffic and the cagers trying to run you off the road. Will a 150cc scooter be able to commute distances of 15 miles at 50 to 55 mph? I would hope so. I ride my LX150 120 miles in 2 hours on the Interstate. Lesser 150 scooters might not. Is it better to buy a light weight 150cc scooter verses a heavy scooter?... weight, is the more one has, the slower the scooter ... Better for what? I bought my scoot at age 66, with medical problems (don't we all) and wanted the minimum weight capable on the freeways. Rented an LX150, found it was acceptable, so I bought it. The Vespa is 245 pounds, claimed. Whatever. Weight matters for acceleration. Weight does not matter with top speeds. Gas mileage is about the same. On the Interstate my Vespa gets about 75 mpg doing 60+ mph. My 652cc motorcycle got 70 mpg doing 55-60 mph. The 150 is bare minimum and is marginal on the highway. Unless weight is a priority, go with the 250.

... Too old to DRIVE on the other hand.. Sometimes they don't figure that out until after they've driven through the crowd of people at the bus stop.. I used to suggest learning in a car before getting a motorcycle -- you don't get hurt in a cage. Then someone said it is better for kids to start on a small moped/scooter -- they do less damage when they crash. So I now say that everyone should ride on a 50cc moped/scooter for a year or two before they are allowed in a car.

Yesterday at Ralphs an employee offered me a cart. I lifted my helmet -- "basket!" She laughed.
