"Can I take one of those off an identical engine to use for a while until I get a new one?" No, you can't Lain! That would be silly, the VERY low cost of seals and the significant amount of work making it crazy to use a used seal. You seem to know a bit about this... How do I go about doing a replacement?

November 2014 I bought a new 2014 TaoTao Powermax. This week I started to have my first problem. I am having problems with my electric start. I thought it was my battery, so I ordered a new one thinking the factory battery failed on me. I installed the new battery and am having the same problem. I have already ordered a new stater.
I figured I would post my troubleshooting process in case someone else has the same problem.
Problem started with hard electric started. The video shows the problem. Kick starting will start the motor. With the motor off, multimeter shows a voltage of 12.89, and 13.5 while running. This shows the stator is charging. The replacement battery shows the battery is not the issue. The ability to start by kickstart shows the engine or valves are not the problem. The part left that is causing the problem is most likely the starter motor.

I agree... You need to fix or get a new plastic shroud. The air cooled GY6 engines depend on the fan and shroud to remain cool.

Thats too much... If you don't like having to mess with it all the time then just do it according to spec... It should be set using the right tools, don't guess unless you like pushing expensive 2 wheel paper weights home.... I feel bad for your scoot... it's getting abused one owner after another.... Maybe it was .007mm. I do .003inch intake / .004inch exhaust on my 150cc and get a very light tick. I can't image the ruckus that would be caused by .007inch. But he said his rockers were quite, so I'm guessing he meant millimeters.

I think the thread has a very good topic. But I think it has slightly strayed off topic.
I have a unifilter directly attached to my carb, and was thinking about adding the extender to push it out farther from the engine heat. But I have hesitated on doing the mod because of how it may change the dynamics of the air:fuel ratio.
How I see it, with the filter directly attached the amount being sucked in remains fairly consistent. Since the wind hits the front and rolls off the sides. However, with the filter protruding from the side, air would be forced into the filter at higher speed causing a imbalance in the air:fuel ratio. Now this would be corrected with additional carb tuning. And would the extension create vortexes within the tubing, and what would those disturbances have an affect on the air intake?
Plus, generally in my area the wind flows from south to north. That means my ride to work is slightly slower with more wind compared to from work to home. Would this difference in wind speed affect the ratio?
So I'm still wondering the benefits versus drawbacks. Or if I'm completely overthinking it.

What I'm wondering is(I work on automobiles for a living) when I set my rocker arms on a motor there always tight, but everyone says to have a gap on a motorcycle's rocker arms, I don't like that tapping just sounds like it's weakening my rocker arms! So, I set them where they wiggle but don't tap, BEAUTIFUL! THNX, Alex What did you set the lash at?

I'm ready to give up... not even full blown mechanics know what is wrong with it... scooters are just junk, completely unreliable you have to rebuild them every few months and it cost more to own one than buying a whole fleet of cars. No one here in the entire state of Ohio even knows how to work on one and it shows. I've replaced 4 major components and still have the same issue as I have had since it started to mess up 3 weeks after I bought it NEW. Nothing can fix this scooter without replacing every single part constantly and paying someone a fortune to do it. A waste of time and money. Where are u at in Ohio ? I'm in western pa. If not too far maybe I can help. And I'll do it for free . +1 bone.

Yes it's normal. Since the fan pumps air around the engine shroud, air does flow. Try smelling it. Does the air coming out smell like exhaust or just hot air.

Very nice!!! One of the stickers said 50, so I'm guessing a 50cc. Why not a 150cc? And what brand, mileage, and price?

Anyone have any other ideas? I can check the valves, but I am going to have to prop it up somehow to get under it to do this... my neck is done! You have eliminated most of the areas of interest besides the engine, valves or compression. Those two are probably the problem. You said the battery and stator is good. You said you have a spark. You also said you have a new carb, and buy them new instead of cleaning them. So you know which one to buy. You also said you can see good fuel flow. And you said the engine is trying to crank over. So... Try the compression test first. If your thumb is blown off of the spark plug hole while cranking, then check your valves. That should solve your problem from the troubleshooting you have described.
