I learned that taking pictures of the odometer for oil changes really helps out. My goal was/is to change it every 500km. It's easy to slip up in the warmer months when the miles add up quickly, without anything to refer to. I was doing that onewheel,,but mines still clean at 1000km...you could do 500km in 2 days easy.. 310 real miles (500km) on this little scooter takes me about 3-4 weeks in the summer riding everyday. That'd be a lot of country road riding since I can't ride this on highways--- maybe on a 150. I don't do long trips because there isn't anywhere worth going on this thing outside of town, unfortunately. South Bend is a 25 min car ride from here-- but that's from point a to point b, not country roads. It'd probably take me well over an hour to get there- just not worth the time or boring scenery on the way, lol. My oil change average was probably closer to 600km. It was pretty dark at 800+km and easily pitch black at 1000km.

On mine you can pop the panels off as a whole assembly after taking off the rack and a few nuts and screws for the seat bucket.
Not sure why you would want to completely strip it-- sounds like overkill and a headache to me!

From my 5 or so experiences, the sound was always there from the very beginning until the soon to be end. I could always hear it at idle, cold or hot. It wasn't always as noticeable at higher speeds going down the road (either muffled or some sort of physics invovled), but the sound was always there at idle and very low speeds. It didn't matter if it was the rod bearing or the other 2 bearings on the crank--- I've had 2 main side bearings (left and right) and at least 3 rod bearings go out. It never went away and came back. These are just my experiences on my engine size/model.
The only other thing about the sound I can tell you is that it progressively got worse/louder day-by-day, or every other day, until it took a crap.
Maybe it's not your crank?

Just be careful if it is the crank, because once I started hearing that sound, all gazillion of my cranks went out completely within 2 weeks of everyday riding-- leaving me stranded wherever I was. Only posting this because I read your post the other day about you riding your scoot to work.

It's always my hands, chin, and upper neck area that are the coldest---even with 2 balaclavas or a heavy duty ski-mask, it still can suck. When it's really cold my face shield freezes over to the point to where I'll, sometimes, have to ride with it up--- even with the "anti-fog" lens I have, it'll still fog up. My lens isn't exactly air tight either.
I used to ride with thin pair of gloves underneath a bulkier pair. That really seemed to help.
I'm not doing much of the cold winter weather riding this year. Probably just to the store for some late night food or the gas station. I'm kind of over the riding in the colder months.
Hopefully all this "Polar Vortex" crap isn't like it was last year.

I average between 500-600 miles(kms) between oil changes with mine, THIS time around. I feel that I should have done that from the very beginning-- about 45,000 kms ago. It was closer to 1,000km between changes in the past. I'm shooting to get past the 15,000 mark for the crankshaft on this engine. I've been riding approximately 100 plus TRUE miles a week easily(probably closer to 130), at full throttle for the majority of them. It's about 9 true miles to work (18 round trip), which would be of those miles a week---- and I'm guessing 6 (12 round trip) of those miles are at max speed (max has been between 45-51mph, which has got to be somewhat close for gps, ever since my gear change). I don't have a lot of stops along the way, either. We'll see what happens. I've got about 4,700 on this engine. I feel good about it though this time around.

A 50mm bbk and a set of scrappy 50/16 gears would do you pretty well if you are trying to stay on a cheap budget and doing the work yourself. What budget and speeds are you looking for? Scrappy doesn't sell the 50/16 gears anymore.

Every now and then I think about that---- adjusting the valves before any symptoms start of the gap(s) being too tight. If my scoot is running fine, I'll change the oil and that's pretty much it. I guess I'm curious as to what we'd benefit from by adjusting the valves before symptoms start, besides just avoiding poor/hard starting, lack of power...etc...etc. I think Rockynv posted something about that at one time, not too long ago. Sometimes, it's the frog in the boiling water syndrom. You don't think you have lost any performance, but you have. It has just happened over a long period of time. When you finally adjust the valves you notice a huge difference in MPG or acceleration is better etc. Good point!

If a motor does not start on the 1st or 2nd SHORT hit of the start button something is not right. If you have to crank and crank the motor to start it needs some TLC. Alleyoop You got that right!! The first year I had this scooter, 2007(?) I think, my scooter was very hard starting and then died out about 200 feet down the road. Again, very hard to start back up and seemed to make it a bit further before it died again. That starter was toast after about a week. This was way back when I was in a Yahoo Group for my scooter. I posted my issues on that group, and guess who brought up the valves? JR. Lol. So glad those days are over!
