I'm really bummed for your situation. Wish I was closer to take a couple of kids in for the time. I had to put my 16 yr old tortoise down last year and can't seem to want another, just yet. As all the other members have said, keep strong, nothing is for ever and learn while your in there. I know this site won't be the same without your input.

the cat sanctuary lady just called,
BUN BUN has something wrong with her teeth,
and homeless has a heart murmur, which either they didnt see last year or missed it.
the others are settling well , as can be expected.
