Retiring in a couple of months and would like to start a 50cc moped business. In PA. no m/c endorsement needed 50cc and below. Would like Ideas on how to get this off the ground. If anyone in Pa. could help me out with info on this, would be much appreciated. Don't want to get too carried away. Maybe get like 4 or 5 different styles 1 of each. I now have a 2014 T/T 50 in red and people ask where I got that neat little thing. Would like to introduce these to my area, seems to be alot of interested ppl and would like to get this started before the season starts. NOVA1970

Why just 50cc scooters? Why not sell scooters that are more open highway friendly? JR

Learn to do a good PDI and be ready to do a lot of warranty work. All depends on quality of PDI and scooter? I've got a 09 model 50cc scooter that I paid $379 for and did a real PDI on it, has never had a wrench on it. Even though it's not rode that much for it to be a 09 model that I just cranked up and is idling now purring like a kitten is enough to show that all of them don't need warranty work and BTW it's a cheap Roketa. Like they say "start small". Besides mopeds come in different styles and models some of which are quite cute besides being fun and economical. Women are intrigued by something they are not intimidated by. Give a woman 10 mins to feel it out and they become confident. I call them legal mini-bikes and fun to ride. I know I am enjoying mine. Yes, little things go wrong with them, but usually simple fix.

The laws vary from State to State about what is required for licensing. Your first step would be to contact your local DMV Dealers section and find out what the requirements are to be a Moped Dealer. Some States you do not need to be licensed as a dealer just a Federal ID number and Tax number, others require a dealership license. For example, Wisconsin has 3 types of license, Below 50cc Moped Only, Full Motorcycle and Full Dealership ( you can sell anything) Also some States require Bonding. The folks at your local DMV will be able to give you that info.
Second, you will need to find a Wholesale Distributor to sell you the machines you want to sell. Take your time and find one that suits your needs. Each distributor has the their own requirements, like how many units you must buy per year, what type of financing terms they have ect. Do not get locked into a distributor that requires you to buy and carry a huge inventory. Most Chinese Distributors will work with you, the BIG 4 require a lot of inventory and has to many rules for the small dealer. If you would like, you can contact me and I can help you get set up with Ice Bear. From experience I can tell you they are the best I have dealt with in over 23 years in business. That decision is yours.
Third, make sure you have a place to work on these machines and someone qualified to do so. Example: Wisconsin requires either a shop on the licensed property or a contract with a local shop to do repairs and warranty. Along with that, you need a place to store machines and parts.
Good Luck with your endeavor.

I was a dealer in Pittsburgh for 6 years. I can count on two hands the number of 50cc scooters we sold. If you've got any terrain other than flat land, you're in for a real headache. Becoming a motor vehicle dealer in PA is a long, arduous ,not to mention expensive, process. Good Luck.

We have had dealers in PA do very well with 49cc scooters in the past. Would love to help you getting set up as we have a need for quality dealerships in PA representing Bintelli!

My suggestion is drop the somewhat sexist attitude. Women also hate being patronized. A friend walked out of a dealership when the salesman turned to her husband to ask "what are you looking for?" after she told him she was buying the new car. I've walked out on clerks treat me to "isn't this so cute!" after I've told them what I wanted (which wasn't the "cute" thing).
On the other hand, if you treat us with respect and the same as any man who comes in, things will be just fine. It took the Piggy dealer more than your "10 minutes" before I was confident about the scooter idea. He never once acted like my interest should be in cute fun non-intimidating. He asked how I planned to drive it, he listened (there's the important part!) to my answers, then advised me on what to look at.
And btb, sometimes women *are* intrigued by things that intimidate them. I'm fascinated by my friend's machines in his machine shop, even though they intimidate the heck outta me.
