The metal cap seems like it's still sealed on. I innocently tried unscrewing it before reading do not do that.
cyborg, I would question the pawn shop, but I know they wouldn't mess with it like that. Or else she would've told me, "Besides the new bulbs we also tried this'n'this." And I would say packing it up while the lava was still warmed did it, but it wasn't flowing while in the shop. So no, I think the shop didn't mess with it.
rocky, same thing. The cap doesn't look messed with at all. And it was working fine when the previous owned turned it in to the pawn shop. It was only after that bulb burned out that it's had issues. In the shop 'cause they weren't using the right bulb. Here because, well, issues. And who knows, maybe "worked fine" to the pawnshop folks meant exactly what it's doing, making tubules instead of floating/sinking globs.
It'll be interesting to see if an extra 15ish minutes (old analog timer, so exact is not an option) changes anything.

If it was warm when they packed it and the spring is not laying flat on the bottom of the lamp or broke while transporting it then that could present a problem as would any wax that has not melted and is still stuck to the sides of the globe or in the cap if it was not transported vertically and right side up.

Oh, it definitely was not transported vertically. I was lucky they found the big box the previous owner had brought it in. The coil had indeed shifted, but it resettled the first time I let it run. And all the wax melted as well, with none I can see stuck to the sides anywhere. I even double-checked the coil after talking with LL lady, since she did ask. Besides learning that the globe is even heavier when it's hot!hot!hot!, I did confirm the coil is indeed nestled at the bottom where it belongs. Yeah, after the fact I realized I should've told them let it cool and I'd pick it up next day. Wasn't that smart. >'Kat

And tonight's update.
We currently have big fat tubules fluctuating towards the top. Lamp should've turned on sometime a little before noon.

Tonight's finale--very fluid pulsating tubules. But still not balls. It tries to make a glob come off the end of a tube, but then it pulses and engulfs the almost-glob.
I think between lifting the globe while warm (well, okay, hot) to check on the coil, and now moving it to nestle in the box-corner, has done more harm. Seems harder to see the tubules. I'm worried I've made it cloudy now.
dollar, it just may have conquered me with this. Sigh.

Btb, where do these youtube guys get all their disposable money? I've seen a guy pour molten aluminum into a grande lava lamp (yes, ruining the lamp), another shattered the top to drop his iPhone 6 gold into same (yes, ruining the lamp and apparently the phone).
Interesting that neither guy seemed to understand why the bulb exploded. Hm. Hot molten aluminum running out the top and also shattering the bottom, and hot molten lava-wax running out the top and into the base. Why do you think the bulb exploded? Duh. Don't have to be any sort of engineer to figure out that one.
HEY STUPID GUYS, WHY NOT JUST SEND ME EITHER THAT MONEY OR THAT GRANDE LAVA LAMP, AND I'LL TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT!!! not fair, she mutters.

I totally do not understand how lava-wax works. We got home, oh I dunno, maybe around 2:30, 3ish, and I had collapsed intestines. Meaning the wax had heated enough to make small tubules. It currently is just sitting there doing nothing except presumedly heating more. Any conjectures why it was warm enough earlier to make intestines but not now? Or did making intestines tire it so now it's resting ? This lamp is gonna drive me to drink! >'Kat

It almost sounds like some of the soap or oil leaked out or that whatever had encrusted in the cap over the years got loosened while it was laying on its side and has contaminated the goo since you mentioned the water is now cloudy. Most Lava Aficionados would probably clean it out and start over with fresh goo.
My daughter has the grand sized one and the dog and cat have knocked it over onto the terrazzo floor numerous times however thankfully it has never broken and still works fine.

Okay, latest update on the Saga of the Lava Lamp.
I believe I posted that I got ahold of a customer service lady at LL. She told me to run it ten hours for four days, then call her on Fri. Well, that would've only made three days, so I delayed, intending to call on Mon (2 weeks ago)
Then I got all focused on getting ready for the AGT auditions here in KC, and totally blew off the lava lamp.
I called her last Mon and left a message. Tried again Weds and Thurs but left no message. Called yest once more and got her. Once she remembered why I was calling her, she told me she would replace my lamp! Sent me an email with some things to fill out like where I got it and the number under the cap. Plus send a photo--oh, I've got some icky intestines ones I can attach, ewww.
I am so pleased, plus very impressed with Lava Lamp's customer service. Gosh.
And yes, I shall most very definitely adhere to the instructions she gave me of no less than six hours. Preferably ten. And I shall be certain to not lift it to check the coil while hotHotHOT!!!! Or to move it a few feet over, sloshing the liquid inside. I shall take good care of the replacement. I shall hug it and squeeze it and call it George.

That's impressive service on an old used lamp from the second hand store. Or is it new enough to be under warranty?

Dunno, rocky. Maybe that's why she wants the number from the cap under the lid. She might look it up and say, That thing's 20 years old! Never mind us replacing it, go away now.
Of course, pawner could've just gotten it and pawned it right away for the cash instead. No way to know.

And the happy next act in this saga that is so amusing mftic (you bad boy you )-- I got home tonight and there's this HUGE tall box waiting for me! Yep, there's a new lava lamp inside! I was starting to figure it was too old and LL lady had blown me off. I planned to email and check on the status on Mon. I double-checked my email and found a note from her Weds saying it was coming--had a weird e-dress so I had ignored it. I've unpacked the brute and hauled each part down here to my bedroom. And now I'm torn--of course I want to run it right now and see how it does, but I also want to wait to contact LL lady Mon just to confirm the proper best way to start up a brand new one. I'M SO FREAKIN' HAPPY RIGHT NOW I PROBABLY WON'T FALL ASLEEP FOR 3 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >'Kat
