Hi everyone, just thought I'd throw in my two cents . I don't know if anyone mentioned this or not, and I don't know the laws in VA.but in my state all radar guns must be calibrated every 30 days and the police department must keep records of this. if the radar gun the officer used has not been calibrated you can have the speeding ticket thrown out of court. this may help you with the speeding part of your problem.another thing you can do is find a speedometer repair shop and have them test your speedometer for accuracy. now this may or may not help your defense depending on which way the speedometer is wrong .fast or slow (hope you get what I mean) this to maybe grounds for having the ticket thrown out. as you didn't know your speedometer this wrong at the time, if you do this make sure you bring proof to court . as I said I don't know the laws in VA. but I would look in to it. this has worked for me in the past. as for the other tickets I would take the advice of others, like getting insurance, showing the court you do have a licence , and so on. good luck I hope you can beat it or at lease beat some of it. it sounds like the officer kind of had it out for you.again good luck. later

You should point out the cop was using a radar gun unless the cop knows and understands how to use it if you can get the cop to admit that there was a car close behind you ,you can argue that he was picking up the speed of the car behind you this happens the radar gun see,s and reads the cars speed because its bigger . Stand your ground do not plead guilty!! and if can,t afford a lawyer the state will have to pay for one your position should be my scooter is 49cc is not capable of 45mph therfor non of the other tickets would apply . If you let the courts know you believe your not guilty and will go to a jury trail I got a ticket in July was put in jail had my scooter impounded been to court 5 times now today I just got home from the latest court date I have turned down a plea bargen and we was set for a jury for this wedsday . To day the judge seen the case for what it is a waste of the courts time and has reset it agene for may But she told the prosecutor she intends to dismiss it . I will move to sue for all my lost time and money STAND YOUR GROUND Indianapolis ,IN

Jail time with all this bother and potentially lost time at work along with loss of personal time to prove what? How does one turn a basic traffic stop and citation event on a 49cc scooter into jail time without assaulting the officer or getting a contempt charge levied against you once in a courtroom? Cheaper and less dramatic to take the online refresher course than to go this route. Event is over in less than an hours time online from the comfort of your home with no jail or court time and the ticket is usually recinded unless you have multiple offenses where you were guilty.

Wow. Reading what-all rider went through makes me feel rather like when I fought the parking ticket.
They called a guy up. He approached, with his lawyer. I couldn't hear what he'd done nor anything 'til the judge said, "You've already served five days in jail, ten more plus something-hundred fine." Smacked his gavel. Called me next. REALLY? You couldn't at least have someone else between jail-time and big fine, and me fighting the $20 parking ticket? REALLY??
I've always wondered what guy had done to warrant all that from traffic court.

Kat - I had an employer get arrested for parking in a 5 minute zone while eating his lunch. The officer asked nicely for him to move the vehicle so he moved it about a foot and then proceeded to argue with the officer about sartisfying the point of law by doing that. The officer warned him that all he had to do to avoid a ticket was drive away and ended up having to give him a ticket which the boss threw out the window. He ended up in jail and loosing thousands of dollars in business over now wanting to honor the 5 minute parking zone or comply with the officer.
How you present yourself and talk can make a big difference in the outcome of any situation. Write down the badge number and bring the matter up with the City Attourney, your selectman, etc or go to court with your best manners and 99.999% of the time no jail time will be involved in traffic court.

I managed to get all but the speeding dismissed. I pulled the GPS data from my logging app I use for exercise and printed out the route with timestamps and speed. I was able to show that I was doing 35mph at the time (which was still over the 30mph limit on the road). I still have to pay, but $140 is better than the $1800 I was looking at.
Also, during the hearings, the same officer had three more scooters stopped that same day, in the same area, and supposedly doing the same thing as me, 45 in a 30. All three of them also stated that they were doing 30-34mph according to their speedometers.
Either the officer was targeting scooters, he swept when targeting (which will produce a higher speed reading), or his lidar was needing calibration.
