I recently did an 80cc big bore on a 50cc Tao Tao. Top speed is 42-46 mpg (gps) and acceleration is great too. Would I notice a change with rollers/sliders at this point? I dont want to sacrifice acceleration or top speed at this point but I'm open to gains on either. Main jet is # with aftermarket intake. I'm 185lbs.

Night and day difference between rollers and sliders, you should get at least 3 sets to try them and decide which one fits your needs better, I would suggest 9g, 10g, and 11g. Also, an advancing CDI, hotter coil and iridium spark plug are cheap mods that you will definitely feel the difference.

9g/10g/11g is for a 50cc? Everything i read seemed to point more towards 6g/7g/8g

this link: fc.greensboroday.org/~epaynter/brcvtit's for a 244cc but the general trend should be obvious. every one of the numbers will no doubt be different for a 50cc, but the idea is clear. increasing the roller weight will give a slower acceleration but a higher top end also, keep in mind that max torque happens at a certain RPM. lighter weights will allow you to hit this RPM sooner, hence faster acceleration.

Thanks, that chart is very helpful. What I see though from this is top speed and acceleration are a trade off. I don't want to give up either but wouldn't mind noticeable gains to either. Does that mean that I'm already at where I need to be with the stock rollers?

Sliders work a bit different than rollers. They give you better takeoff and a couple mph more top end. I highly recommend them, and a performance variator with a more aggressive ramp angle helps to.

Thanks for the info. If I don't want want to spend a lot of time searching for the perfect size slider. I just want to throw something in that will be better than where I am now. What size is recommended if I'm already satisfied with the stock performance? I've read on what forum that Tao Tao stock 50cc rollers are 5.5g. I'm not sure how accurate that is

Take out your rollers and weigh them. If you don't have issues at their weight, use the same size sliders.

Everything i read seemed to point more towards 6g/7g/8g You no longer have a 50cc, you put a BBK on it, the bigger the displacement, the more weight is needed on the sliders/rollers; if the sliders/rollers are too light, you will top your RPMs too fast and kill your top end.

Well that makes sense. You think I will be safe just sticking 9g sliders in there? I'm going for better performance but dont care to the the most optimal size if I can skip the trial rollers. I'll do the trial rollers if I have to but prefer an educated guess of where I need to be. Also should I stick with Dr Pulley or are there other slider brands I should look at?

I have 7g sliders with a 50mm (~82cc) BBK, I could possibly go up another gram, but i have enough takeoff power to lead the pack at lights, and ni problem cruising at 45mph, with great response throughout.

Does that mean that I'm already at where I need to be with the stock rollers? every rider is different. yes i liked the super fast acceleration of very light weights, but i found that 120 grams (244cc) was better suited for the type of riding i did. i had better high end performance. like one of the posts above says, you can buy a performance variator, and sliders, to tweak your performance. keep in mind that this will be a trial and error process, you will no doubt have to remove the variator a few times to get exactly what you want. this of course means you will need a few sets of sliders (or rollers) of slightly different weights and most come in packs of 6. i'm not a 50cc guy so i have no idea what size weights you should get.

Well at this point I'm mechanic'd out. I just wrapped up the big bore and its tuning in my living room last week. I just want to slap in some sliders and be done. I don't want to tinker to get another mph. Any gains are good gains since I'm already happy with the bikes performance. Just need to know what weight is most likely going to do the job. In your experienced opinions 7g? 9g? Or will any of these be better than the stock rollers I already have?
