OK, so I've got a brand new bike that has a heat shield vibration. We disassembled the heat shield and added washers to the back, where there were none (they were on many bolts, but not at the back of the shield). This helped a lot, but didn't solve the problem.
What I've been thinking is that if there were some sort of high-temp rubber gasket or washer then it would absorb or dampen the vibration but, of course, the exhaust is no place for something that could easily melt. We thought about jb weld, but I really don't want to go adding that to a brand new bike. Silicone can't stand the heat. There's a product called 'thermo-tork' that can withstand heat up to 750 degrees F, which I may research further, but I thought that I'd toss it out to the group to see if anyone has had this problem and come up with a clever, non-visible or intrusive solution.
Thanks in advance, shanty

You're on the right track........ An additional brace could be the answer...... Most aftermarket exhaust kits come with a brace that wraps around the exhaust for a reason......... That's a different topic though. Then again, Removing the shield is another idea....... Maybe some Heat Wrap would look cooler??!!. Simple answer---- Take Off the Heat shield, Just mind your leg position Good Luck!!!!!!!!

What about Aluminum foil? Or make a washer out of a cut up coke can?

Are you sure it is the heat shield? Don't know what model scooter you're speaking of, but some like mine, with the rear disc brake, are known to rattle in that area. I took the muffler heat shield off mine when new, thinking that was the culprit....but it wasn't. Turned out to be the brake caliper/pad/pin design, still rattles today when applying more than 1/2 to 2/3 throttle. Doesn't seem to bother anything other than my ears though, for with 8,100 miles on them, the pads show little wear, and work just fine.
Just a thought.

If it is the heat shield just pull it again and use spring washers,( some call them wavey washers),,,, that should eliminate the rattle

Hi, all,
I've been away most of the week, and sorry. Starting a new dealership requires just as much work as you might think, especially if one wants to offer the level of concierge-style service that we aspire to...
We did isolate it as the heat shield. I still think that the thermo-tork would be a good idea, but haven't spent a whole lot of time on it since my last post. The spring washers are a GREAT idea, and one I'm going to look at tomorrow.
Thanks all,
Shanty

The washers go on the outside of the heat shield. Make sure all the bolts are tight and only tighten them before you first ride, otherwise heat expansion etc... It goes bolt>washer>heat shield>muffler. You may also benefit from using some sort of adhesive meant for high temp, or paint. I used rustoleum on my heatshield it can act sort of like an adhesive if you put it together before the paint entirely cures.

Cyborg, I think it's a brilliant solution. I'm not at the shop today, but I'm going to order/buy them and keep them in stock. That buzzing bugs the h3ll out of me.

What spring washers are you guys talking abuot? Just wondering, I tried using springs before to dampen vibration on bolts but they would always get pushed out by the springs. There's an actual washer that is a spring or something?
