OK, so I've been around here and the old board long enough to understand the overwhelming belief that Kevlar is king for belts. I can understand why, as well. What I can't understand is exactly which belts use kevlar.
According to my very knowledgeable and excellent new scooter parts dealer, both the Gates Premium Powerlink and the Continental Contitech Scooter XT V-Belt (835-20-30 for both) are Kevlar, even though neither of them claim to be... they believe that the reason it isn't listed that way is that Kevlar is a registered trademark, but the material is the same. (Gates just claims premium materials, I think Continental uses "Polycord")
Bando DOES use the Kevlar trademark, but for the life of me I can't find one in the 835-20-30 size that does, though "Kevlar" belts for the 50cc models are easier to find).
Any insights, anyone? We're trying to order the very best for our first load of scoots... our initial PDI is going to include a first-rate belt upgrade on all bikes.
Thanks, Shanty

Depending on your supplier, you may have a decent brand name belt already on them. The three in the crate Chinese scooters I bought came with Gates belts. Check the scooters out out before you buy a bunch of belts.

Actually, that's not a problem at all... they come with Bando belts already, but what they don't come with is the premium belts that allow us to point to what we're doing as better than the next guy... I never want to have to discount ONE penny because someone says "Well, I mean, it's a Chinese Scooter..."
True, it's a Chinese Scooter, and I understand the problems they've encountered in the marketplace and in manufacturing, but that's not the scooter we're carrying. As far as I'm concerned we're carrying a brand that puts real care into their product and that we want to represent honestly as being 'best of breed'. We're going to also point to the way we do our final assembly as a reason to pay more with us. We want to be the top-flight purveyor of what we believe is the up and coming top-flight Chinese Make.
So, a belt upgrade is what OUR brand, Other Ride Motors is going to provide with every bike... we just want guidance on what YOU would want if you were buying a new bike.
I've asked this before, as well: any other obvious PDI upgrades that you can name may very well make onto some or all of our first scoots. Let us know what would make you swoon, without voiding the factory warranty.

Gates premium however the drive faces would also have to be up to the task. No sense in putting a Kelvar or Aramid belt on a standard soft variator or the fibers can score and groove them in very short time. The Bando while tough seemed more prone to damaging soft drive faces from what I have seen so far.
The GY6 design however is deficient in the CVT since it does not have the outer bearing to support the clutch shaft like the more modern designs from Piaggio. That would probably be the #1 improvement I would want to see to give the GY6 more stability and make them less prone to exhaust and rear body damage from vibration as the gear box bearings start to loosen from the strain of the belt and any related vibrations. A clutch shaft thats an inch longer and a ball bearing in the CVT cover is all that would be required and would make the bikes quite a bit more solid.
