As some of you know I am reviving my sleeping giant (50cc scoot). I finally got her started and running yesterday thanks to Mr. Beenridings plug boot diagram. (Thanks again) Anyways, I went for a small test ride and to my surprise, I have NO front brakes. Seems a bit unsafe for riding at this time IMO..... This is just the typical front disk brake with an ABS (not really ABS) China scoot setup. I did a bit of research and opened up the master cylinder....... I assume Brake fluid is not supposed to be Black.... I know new fluid and bleeding is needed. One step at a time though. I get ZERO resistance when I pull the brake lever so, Where should I start? A new Master cylinder is around 25 dollars but, before I throw new parts at the problem I would like to know more about how it all works. Like, is there a piston or seals I should try replacing first? ANY front brake knowledge would be appreciated--- Any tips tricks or advice to get things at least working would be very helpful.... I have done NOTHING (my mistake) to the brakes since the original purchase of this scoot 2010/2009 I knew this was going to be an issue.
Today I have simply opened up the master cylinder cap...... Seems over filled with black fluid........ I know that's not right and when pulling the handle it almost sounds like rubber rubbing together...... (for lack of a better description)
I have tightened down the rear drum so I can at least come to a stop.
OK Now GO!!!!!!!!

Howdy Horace, I've only worked on a front disk system once. My fluid was also blackish and seemed very watery for brake fluid. Your seals are probably shot, think it'd be easiest to replace the whole caliper unit and flush it good. Then use a real brake fluid to fill it up with. New seals would probably cost 1/2 as much as the unit, and then you gotta play with it. Orrr, you could try to take it all apart, clean it real good with brake clean and rebuild it. Unless those seals are indeed broken then it's a replace. But first try just replacing ALL the tea they put in there as brake fluid and pump it thru, bleed it out good. You do know how to bleed brakes? Maybe just replacing the old fluid and evacuating the air will work. Good luck.

Yes there is a piston and seals in there . for $25 bucks I wouldn't get my hands dirty. Brake Fluid Absorbs Water, its supposed to be changed every couple years or as manual recommends. Every bike I've had has had a change as part of maintenance. Its even worse using High Temperature Brake Fluids. And the Genuine Fake ABS, take that snit off and put on a regular Banjo Bolt in there, throw that fake thing as far as you can.

I am a really cheap s.o.b. but, I do enjoy learning the inner workings of stuff.
The master cylinder says to use either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid--- what is the difference what is recommended?

The higher the DOT rating the more heat and pressure it can withstand, you'll be fine with 3. I knew a guy once said 'Safety is no accident', whatever that means......

Yeah Pistonguy, that WAS on my to do list (throw the ABS canister) I am a really cheap s.o.b. but, I do enjoy learning the inner workings of stuff. The master cylinder says to use either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid--- what is the difference what is recommended? Diff is operating temp. Either #3 or #4 is fine. They all absorb moisture, nature of the beast. oh snit get in old, #4 is higher temp. I should remember I raced Karts in the 80's and Boiled Lots of Brake Fluid, I think #5 A parts guy with half a brain should be able to find a matching Banjo bolt and two copper washers.

Check it out guys, Not a lot of brake info is found on this forum but, I did find this handy video on youtube...... It showes the exact inner workings of the master cylinder....... My problem (being so cheap) I have no spare parts to replace with... Oh well. I gotta go get a new turn signal bulb for my car so, I'll get some brake fluid and monkey around with things, If bleeding doesn't work, I'll go to Scrappy's this weekend. I just hate going because, I know I'm going to get more stuff... Like a teenager in a Porn shop, I will spend more than I want to

Honestly, I have not gone in at least 3-4 years..... I think they were on Valley View Blvd back then..... Now the shop is on Desert Inn around Eastern.... I maybe wrong. Need to get directions I'll let ya all know when I find out...... Do forum members get a discout? (just kidding)

Quick update- After the rain stopped today I went ahead and simply bleed the brake system with new fluid..... I now have a front brake!!!! Not quite where I want it to be but, operational. Wow what a difference, simply replacing that Earl Grey Tea made....... Still gonna go to Scrappy's this weekend to pick up a few non essentials. New Pads, Misc Hardware, Etc....... I'm thinking the fluid was just too watered down/aerated for human use. Good Luck Guys and thanks again.... See ya soon!!!!!!!

Tea is OK for breakfast but not so much as a hydraulic fluid. Glad your riding for cheap! Keep it going.
