Ok, was looking for clues as to why my idle is sometimes funky, and of course why it had died on me (problem's gone knock on wood), and found this: From top to bottom, the hose runs from the air intake, to the canister, then to... the engine? It seemed weird to me that one hose is hooked up, and the other isn't, its just a foot or so of hose that's capped off. Oh, and its just sitting there, not mounted to anything.

It's an environmental protection device, recycles the oily air that comes off that hose from the front of the engine and puts it into your air supply to be reused/burned off. Maybe charcoal canister, I'm not sure but I know that connection setup is for recycling the oily air from the vent on the front of the engine. You could eliminate it if you think oily air is causing your idle to run rich, or you could simply adjust the a/f mix screw.

be very careful!
that is one of those old suitcase nuclear explosive devices built by the soviet union during the cold war. not only are they very deadly - by now they are very unstable and can be set off even by a simple cell phone. you should call the fbi immediately.

Charcoal? When is the Bar-B-Q ? Looks like things here escalated quickly but, I digress. Indeed that would be the Charcoal/ Catch can. It can be removed or left alone.

Interesting, because based on the forum's info on emissions systems, that wouldn't appear to be hooked up right, considering it has no connection to the fuel tank, and the way its hooked up now seems strange.

It could be the canister was simply repurposed as just a catch can....... Thus the strange connection.
That would make sense IMO but, others may be able to confirm/dispute.
With the pics you provided, it does look like a simple catch can (that yellow hose is not standard). It makes sense someone just used what was availible....(the canister)
GOOD LUCK!!!!

I always remove anything like that since it is not necessary for it to function and often functions better without.

It seemed weird to me that one hose is hooked up, and the other isn't, its just a foot or so of hose that's capped off. Oh, and its just sitting there, not mounted to anything. Over time the blocked off hose accumulates excess moisture and any oil that might be picked up by the canister. When doing routine maintenance remove the cap and drain anything that is in it. JR

JR I suppose my confusion comes from this diagram since there's no tank connection. ((Sorry was busy when i last looked at this thread and forgot to reply until now))

Horace found your answer in the link he attached (post #6 above), and his explanation in post #7.
Go to the linked thread......drop down to reply #3....take a good look at the second picture that Alleyoop added.....that is what your scoot has
This has nothing to do with your gas tank or it's contents.....but is part of your crankcase ventilation system

Interesting, i wonder why it exists? Function wise it reminds me of a Ford PCV system (PCV valve in the cap with a hose going back to a filter in the air cleaner and its own little filter), wonder why they needed something this complex, and why its not mounted to anything, but just hanging out in there.

Mine has one like that which is part if the pair system. But off the canister is a hose to open air which is a fresh air intake which gets drawn by vacuum into the exhaust valve or something. Im just gona get a block off plate, plug off the vacuum line and get rid of the canister. whats Iit attached to? Could it be your pair canister? duno why that hose would have a plug in it though
