Speedo Check

From experience, I know that our 2-wheeled speedometers are notoriously optimistic by roughly 10%. My question is: What is the best/safest way to check how off a speedo is? I have a feeling I'm off by somewhere around 15% and I'd like to be able to know what my actual speed (or very close to it) is while riding. Thanks is advance!

howdy, this response will probably prove to be totally useless to you but here goes.
if you can ride at a steady speed on any of the freeways that have mileposts and have a watch with a way to measure seconds, time yourself between mileposts and divide that into 3600 which will give you exact miles per hour. example if your speed is 60 seconds between mileposts and you divide into 3600 it gives you exactly 60 mpg. it will work at any speed but best if you time between several mileposts and average those results. then simply see what percentage your speedometer is off by comparing the reading on the speedometer to the result of your calculation. obviously this won't work in town.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya. ken

Measured mile or gps via smart phone or dedicated unit. Having a car shadow you is a mixed bag because many depending on the wear on their tires and what optional size they used to do the base design on will be 5 over to 5 under depending on the variables. On one of my trucks it reads 5 under when the tires are new and 5 over when they are near end of life and only dead on accurate when the tires are half worn out.

Thanks for the recommendations! I figure my best option is to use a GPS/smartphone app. I just have to make sure I'm on a stretch where I can hold a speed for a little bit.
I have a cop friend as well. I may have to call him for his services. If not for anything else, it could be fun. Lol
I'm tempted to give this a whirl just because it I'm curious if I can accurately calculate it. Haha. Thanks for the tip!
