I haven't witnessed any Vespa or other owner shunning a Chinese scoot owner. The only shunning here in the USA is usually done by some Harley Davidson owners who refuse to acknowledge an owner of any other brand as being worthy of their time. I think many here buy a Chinese scooter to get a first taste of scootering. I don't mean to say there aren't several fine Chinese makes to own not just as a first scooter, but here in the USA most people not living in a dense urban city don't buy a scooter as their main means of transportation, just as some summertime fun, especially true in the northern areas that get cold winters. You notice that also from the Poser Owners. Back in the day it was all about Two Wheels, Now if you don't have the correct Uniform of No Helmut, Black t-shirt from a HD Dealer that doesn't exist and they have never been there (HD of Cozumel) Huh No such thing. Wont give ya the time of day, Ride it four miles away to the Pub and stand around striking poses and talk about bikes.

Well, for me getting a Chinese scooter was about price -- and just getting some wheels to get around in a new city after a rather catastrophic life event. I just can't afford a pricier vehicle at this point in time, so I chose to go with a scoot. There are not many used ones for sale around here, and for a couple of hundred more I could get a new one, albeit, Chinese. So I purchased the Tao Tao Quantum that I have now. I never owned a scooter or motorcycle prior to this, so was not 100% sure this would be for me.
I live just a mile from where I work. Before I got the scoot, I hoofed it. Now, frankly I wish the distance was further so I could enjoy the scooter more, LOL! But if bad weather hits and I can't take the Tao Tao, as least I can still hoof it.
I'm handy with a wrench, so am not intimidated by whatever work I may have to do on the scooter. Other than a vacuum line off when I first put the scoot together, I've had no problems whatsoever.
I'll admit, one of the reasons I picked ItIsTheRide was a cool thread about the joy of riding a scooter -- and the fact that this site seems to have the least anti-Chinese bias. Sure, I'd love to have a nice big expensive scoot or a motorcycle, but that's just not in the cards for me right now.
Cheers!

JD - Keep your eyes pealed for factory incentives and local Craigs List deals. I walked into the Aprilia dealership one day over 4 years ago on a lark to find out that they would give me a reasonable trade on my Chinese scooter and a deal on a factory incentive Aprilia 250. What I saved on gas since the fuel injected 250 gets better mileage than the GY6 150, lower maintenance since the service schedule was at 6,250 miles for oil changes instead of 500 along with the low cost dealer financing put the bike easily in my reach. So far over 25,000 miles later its now been only scheduled maint and no surprises even after dropping the bike at 40 mph after hitting a light patch of sugar sand there is nothing broken on the bike and only a few scratches.
