Someone tried to steal my taotao speed 50 seems to me they busted the lock for the steering anyway to fix that so it will lock?

Not sure. I've never messed around with that.
If you are going somewhere sketchy, unplug your spark plug, or, if your CDI is in the battery compartment, pull it out and stick it in your pocket. I disabled my start button, and put a toggle where nobody would ever look. Somebody tried to steal mine from the school parking lot where I teach.

Thanks Steve so just don't even fix it because I think it needs to be welded correct?

I don't know. I doubt it's welded. I don't have one on my scoot. I would think it is plastic. I doubt something metal was broken that easy. But, I would bet it is broken, and you would have to get a new part. I will research it for you.
All I know is that all parts of the ignition key switch are very easily bypassed. You just disconnect 1 wire harness, and you can kick-start it, and roll down the road. I would get a cable and lock, or take your CDI with you, or both. Check your wiring, they may have hot-wired it. Does the key turn it off? If so, they didn't get that far.

Looks like they are just a metal tab. They are easily broken. I researched them a bit, and I would not mess with it. Get a lock, and a way to disable the ignition in a creative, or fool proof way. Stealing scoots is an expanding business. Several have been busted around here stealing them, painting them, and selling them on ebay, or craig'slist.

All you need to do is put a switch somewhere . you can hook a switch to the cdi . when it's off you will not get any spark to the plug. Mount the switch somewhere out of site.
When it comes to the " steering lock" I have no clue what that is. Are you saying your handle bars lock in place when your key is out ? Just like a car. I'd just use a cable lock.

Someone tried to steal my taotao speed 50 seems to me they busted the lock for the steering anyway to fix that so it will lock? Two metal tabs on the part where the tripletree connects to the frame. If these were broke it needs welding. Cheaper alternative is a out of sight kill switch. Mine has two on two differing circuits, and hasn't managed to go anywhere by itself yet...

Not to be the pessimist here, but are thieves really taking the excess time to hotwire and drive off your scooters?
A 50cc doesn't weigh that much, nor is it that big. Why not just throw it in the back of a pickup or SUV? And work on starting it when they're somewhere else? Seems it would be faster and easier, and less likely to be observed/stopped.
As for fixing the locking peg/s, from reading on the forum how easy it is to pop them (case in point) I'd say skip fixing them unless they served some other purpose. And go with the guys' suggestion to install a kill switch somewhere hidden.

I was lucky they must have been spooked by something, but they were trying to hotwire it!

I also got one stolen when I was going to college. Somebody pushed it a block down the road, and tried to hotwire it.

Ah. I was thinking bigger-time thieves rather than kids.
