So just in case anyone else ever has this question; Do you need to drain the oil to work on the pump? Answer is yes. No one here seemed to know, no manual said to remove the oil, just says open it and replace the pump.
I have oil going to the head now after replacing the pump.

I was in a hurry the last time I replaced the oil pump and forgot to drain the oil. I ended up with a mess on my porch. I mixed some gas with the oil and lit it up !! I had a nice little bonfire on my porch.

Your gonna have to keep an eye on her . since she wasn't getting any oil to the head or the crank bearings. She was def overheating , hopefully no damage was done.

I'm not sure where the issue is, or the origin of this noise I described before, but I heard it less after getting oil to the top but I still hear it, usually in high RPMs. My tach broke a couple weeks ago (dropped it while carrying lots of parts and it broke into pieces) so I have no idea as far as a reading. I've decided to store it until a good like 70 degree day to strip down the head and see if there's any damage to the valves or cylinder. I still have my 50cc so I am just using that to get around for now. It's so nice to have 2 scoots now lol.

if you ran it without oil getting to the head i would seriously inspect the cam and lifters, and check the valve springs. of course i wont rule out a jacked cylinder but thats mainly splash lubed, so fingers crossed.

I'd def get an oil temp gauge for your scoots. That way If you notice a jump in temp , you can do a quick test to see if the pump is still working, or possibly another issue.

Let's hope it's just the CVT belt of something easy like that ...

how hard is changing the pump? how did you test it? To test the oil pump , remove the valve cover ,and start the scoot. You will have oil being pumped to the top of the rocker arms and the cam . maybe lay a towel down under the scoot. It only takes a couple seconds to see if its working, then shut her down to avoid a mess.

I actually tucked a towel between the bottom of the head and the cooling shroud , so no oil ran down in the shroud.
