We had this problem about 2 weeks or so ago, the electric start AND the kick start weren't working. We took it to the dealer and got it repaired, the electric start worked for one day and then stopped working again. We can kick start it fine but not electric, it just makes a grinding sound. We bought another spark plug but when we called the dealer and asked they said they already replaced it when it was there and that it was most likely the battery, that it was a bad battery and wasn't recharging. We checked the battery with a tester we had and it says the battery has voltage. We live pretty far from the dealer and literally just got it back, and they were kinda jerks to us last time we took it so we really don't want to take it back. The problem they fixed while it was there was a hole in the left intake valve, but obviously there was another problem that they did not fix. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? We really don't want to have to buy another battery unless we absolutely have to, we've only been able to kick start it for about a week now. It runs fine when we do kickstart it.

hole in the intake valve?? how?? kinda sounds like bs for a starting issue.
It sounds like it could be the battery. Order a better one online than your dealer would charge you for a regular one in person. Also order a maintainer so you do not have dead batteries again. Remember to charge the battery when it is not in use, and yes they do discharge when not in use.

The dealer told us the battery should recharge on it's own anyways. We looked in the engine and did find where they made the original repair so we know they at least did something to fix half of the problem.

The dealer is an idiot then. Batteries do not recharge themselves. Your stator will help keep it charged but if the scoot sits a lot, that won't do anything. Scrappyogs sells a lithium one for $ (I think) that should last you nearly forever. Yes, I known $ is a lot for a scooter battery but considering you'll probably never have to buy another one....priceless. =))

When it wouldn't start with the kickstarter, did pushing down on it at least turn the engine over, or did it just grind same as with the electric starter?
I wouldn't trust a word out of that dealer's mouth. A hole in the intake valve could only be formed by extreme overheating, and the exhaust valve would have failed first since it gets hotter.

When it didn't start with the kickstart, I would rev it while my boyfriend tried to kick start it and it would turn over and start and then immediately die, it wouldn't idle at all. Now it's fine and runs but it's just a hassle to have to kickstart it every time to turn it on. We bought a Schumacher SEM-1562A-CA 1.5 Amp Speed Charge Battery Maintainer off Amazon (literally copied and pasted the name of it) so hopefully that will help. I'll update if it works. And yeah we figured the dealer was full of it and that's part of the reason we didn't want to take it back, the mechanic tried to claim it was OUR FAULT and that we 'drove it too much' because it had 160 miles on it. He was actually a jerk about it.

Sounds like carburetor issues coupled with a bad battery. The scooter only charges the battery at midrange and up, and at a low rate. A 10 miles ride from kickstarting on a dead battery may only get you 1-3 start attempts off the electric after you turn it off depending on how much stop and go there is.

Easy to tell if it is the battery . get a set of jumper cables , hook the scoot batter to a car battery. Try to start the scoot. If it starts just fine , then the battery is toast. Even if the battery is showing voltage doesn't mean its ok. The battery should read over 12 volts when fully charged and must be able to hold the voltage under load. These batteries go bad pretty easy. Now if you jump the scoot and all it does is grinds, then I would say a possible starter or starter clutch issue .
