How many miles is enough for a new engine to brake in? Also during the brake in period, how many miles between every oil change?

How many miles is enough for a new engine to brake in? Also during the brake in period, how many miles between every oil change? 500 miles should be fine . I'd do the first oil change after the first run . try to make the first run at least 20 miles. I'd do the next change at about 100 miles . from there I'd do a change every 100 miles until you reach 500 miles. I'm sort of a nutt when it comes to changing oil . I usually change the oil every 500 miles. I've went 1000 a few times , even 800 now and then. But after a break in I would not wait any longer then 1000 miles to change the oil

On my new motor the way I broke it in was, no wot, and varying rpms as much as possible for the first 100 miles. Changed the oil at 100 miles, and have started to ride it more "normal" not riding it as hard as the original motor lol. Changed gear oil also at 100 miles. Will probably change oil again after 500 miles, then every 1000. My scooter is a daily driver, four days a week are 10 miles round trip, and one day a week is 28 miles round trip. Had just over 4k on original motor, but I did the "ride it like ya stole it" break in method. Ended up with an oil leak after 2k, and then died just after 4k. So here's to hoping I can get more miles out of this one.

The reason you want to do the first oil change sooner , is because this is the time you will more than likely have the bigger pieces of metal in the oil. Its best to get rid of them as soon as possible.

These don't even use a quart of oil, and no filter. It's so cheap and easy to do. I think I changed mine around 70 and again around 300.

As long as you don't use royal purple like I do , I'd change it as often as possible. When I looked back at the old scootdawg site, when I did my break in , I used penzoil , then at the first oil change I switched to royal purple. Many say not to use synthetic during break in , but I used it pretty early and I've had no top end or crank issues yet. Of course royal purple is a very good synthetic.

It would be nice to have an actual oil filter on these scoots .

It would be nice to have an actual oil filter on these scoots . I'm a nut too when it comes to oil changes--- something I wish I was at the very beginning of my original engine. I was shooting for around every 500km, but the average has been probably about 650km or so. The first 3 or so changes were much closer intervals.

It seems as if everyone has their own method at break in , but I'm with you . the more often you change oil during breaking, the more likely you will catch any metal shavings from possibly causing an issue.
