my variator is rattling after my belt snapped, does this mean it has to be replaced?

It could be just a roller out of place.
I would take it off, inspect and clean it. It should be okay.

When you replace a belt you need to clean the variator (inspecting the rollers while your at it), clean the clutch along with lubricate the clutch shaft with fresh grease. How many miles since new rollers were installed? They should be replaced with every belt change.
