So I bought a 50cc scooter from a guy here recently, and it seemed nothing was wrong with it when I was checking it out (Found out it has a BBK). I even rode it home but once home had some trouble starting it again. I waited about an hour and drained the carb just to make sure it wasn't flooded, and it started right up on the second kick (The electric start doesn't seem to work, it cranks over but just won't start it, so I've been using the kick start). Well I let it idle for just a few minutes and shut it off. Two days later I go outside and take a look at everything. The fuel line was running straight from the gas tank to the carb so I reconnected it to the petcock. I also charged the battery. Now all of a sudden it won't start at all. I rebuilt the engine with new gaskets, changed the oil, got a new spark plug, and cleaned out the carb and fuel petcock. Still nothing. It won't even start on starting fluid. Every few kicks or so it sounds like its barely trying to start but won't. Its getting fuel, spark, and had enough compression to pop my finger out of the spark plug hole. I'm completely stumped, so any suggestions guys?

If you rebuilt the engine, are you sure you got your timing correct?

Yes I set the piston to top dead center and lined up the holes correctly on the cam gear. I'm thinking maybe the valves need to be adjusted. I'm gonna give it a try in the morning but if it doesn't work I have absolutely no clue what else it could be.

When you hooked the petcock back up did you hook up the vacuum line, too?
It could be the valves.

I don't think it's the valves, if he has compression. if you spray starter fluid and it's not starting and it has compression, then it's a spark issue, or the carb isn't on it (even if you took the carb off, and sprayed starting fluid down the intake manifold, it should start and run util it burns all the starting fluid, if you have spark and compression.
Check the valves, just because it's cheap and it rules it out but I think you will find it's in the ignition somewhere.
How are you testing for spark?

I readjusted the valves but still nothing. All vacuum lines are connected properly and I tested for spark when it was dark outside by removing the spark plug but keeping it connected to the boot and holding it against the head and cranking. It doesn't seem to be a real strong spark, but its there. I'm not really sure what else to check so I dropped it off at a local scooter repair shop earlier and I'm hoping the guy there can figure out something I can't. I'll update as soon as I get it back.

I know this post is 6 years old, but did you ever figure out why your scooter wasn't starting? I am having the same exact issue. Using starting fluid, I have spark and fuel, but the engine is not starting. I guess I will have to test compression next, but I just wanted to hear if you figured anything out

It is probably the killswitch wire, it’s grounded in the key switch or the killswitch most likely easy way to find out is unplug the white and black wire from the cdi box with a small screwdriver. If it starts you can plug it back in to kill it or put a switch on the wire. If that doesn’t fix it try running new ground wires to the cdi box and the coil. If neither of those have an effect try changing the coil wire and then the cdi box. this is just a list of ways to fix it cheapest things first. it’s how I would go about it. If it doesn’t fix the problem please lmk if you do figure it out please comment anyway so people may know how to fix their issue.

I am just going to go with the obvious and say that the vacuum petcock was bypassed for a reason you probably need a new one. and in the meantime may as well re-bypassed the petcock

I never use the vacuum peacock. I always replace it with a manual shutoff valve
