Hi. Just bought a new (never run) 2012 Puma Valentine 50. Starts and runs but the engine gets hot. It feels like it gets starved for fuel when I ride it. Have adjusted the carb and even put a new carb. Also adjusted the valves to be looser. Anyone have any ideas? Help!  |

"Feels hot" is subjective, you need some real data. Pull your spark plug and post a picture of the business end, you want a nice coffee brown color. You could also buy a candy thermometer, and put it in the oil filler tube right after a ride to see your actual temp.

Thanks for the tip. But the problem has been resolved. It wasn't starved for fuel, it was starved for air.  I looked at the air filter and it was like a double air filter. A thick foam attached to a thin open cell type. I removed the thick foam filter and rode the scooter. NO problem!  It was being restricted by the thick foam filter. |

You still want to check the plug to see if you are running lean . running lean will cause the engine to run hot. If the scoot was starved of air , then you where running rich . do u have a temp gauge? |

Thanks JerryScript. Spark plug could be the prob. I will check. Hi Jc53, JerryScript wasn't suggesting the spark plug may be problem. He was suggesting that you pull your spark and inspect the firing end. It's called "reading your spark plug" and the purpose is to allow you see what is happening inside your combustion chamber. .... Here's a good link from NKG on how to read your plug and diagnose what's going on inside. Even though you said you have corrected the problem by de-restricting the air flow, you may still want to get a good read on your plug. |

Sounds like you were running rich because of the tune on your carb plus the fact you have a stock air filter. Try one of these: www.testedscooterparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=10566995It should give you the extra air you need plus provide some sort of filter. Right now you basically have a direct line from open air to your carb which is not good, you will have to clean that carb out so often you'd end up getting rid of it honestly. |

If it was a foam filter , it may have just needed cleaned . you usually apply a special oil to the foam filters after cleaning them .

I just use engine oil on my filters. Didn't have filter oil when I cleaned my filter the very first time a long time ago, never had any problems, so I just continue to use engine oil for my filters. I figure, the oil is used to dampen the filter so debris will be caught in the foam not in the carb, so using a light amount of engine oil seems to work fine for the job and not gunk anything up. |

Yeh , I used motor oil last time also because I ran out of the foam filter oil. I like the spray , I used the non spray oil before and it was so thick and messy . but yep , motor oil is fine . your right lain , its used to catch the small dust and debris. TBA , I think the filter would work fine without any oil . the inner yellow foam filter on the uni filters are very dense and will not let much of anything past it " if anything at all ". Don't get me wrong , I would still oil it but if for some reason you have no oil of any kind I believe the filter would work just fine without it.

It's not as bad as having no air box at all, because it has a couple turns to make, however without the protection debris will surely find it's way into the carb or combustion chamber. I have a few friends who ran without air boxes or filters because they broke. They are really cheap dudes too, so what I did was cut the air box off so there's only the duct, then I put a face cloth over the end of the duct and fastened it with a ziptie. they haven't had to clean their carbs since then and they run really well. |
