The problem I have with rcq's yellow print power link is that , I've never seen a gates Kevlar powerlink that did not have the model number . his should say pl30707 on the belt and it should have came with the sleeve. I think the standard belts are printed like the one in hi pic with the yellow print but it should still come with the sleeve.
The problem with going with the Athena ,MRP , and MALOSSI belts is , I can't find them anywhere for a Chinese scoot 842 X 20 X 30 . so we are stuck with trying to finding a reputable dealer .

The belt I just put on the other day (from partsforscooters) came with a sleeve. It makes me feel a bit better about it for future orders. I actually watched both those videos beforehand.
I couldn't find all my old belts, probably got rid of them, unfortunately. Except one backup.

The Kevlar belts say power link also . from what I know the Kevlar belts have a model # that starts with 3. Like my 842x20x30 is a 30708 and the non Kevlar is 20708 and so on . I'll do a little research and get back to you . Anyway, I am not good at subterfuge so I just asked the seller about the issue and referred him to this thread. Seems like a good guy; answered quickly and did some research. I'm not saying the belt isn't a counterfeit - as we have seen with variators evewn the BEST sellers can get and move product that isn't genuine. here is what he said (s responses):
First: "We have been selling these gates belt for a while now and getting them from 3 different suppliers and it's never been questioned before.. They have always looked the same to me, until recently I did notice the new belts are now coming with the Made in China and the part number on them. From what I heard gates was only producing them for the scooter manufactures in China for use on the manufactured scooters and that was the reason why at first they did not come with the slip or made in china on them.
A few years ago we called gates USA main distributor and they did not have stock any of the common scooter belt, keep in mind that was over 4 years ago, so now maybe now they are since the market has grown. We don't actually go to the manufactures door step so I can't tell you for sure since anything can happen through the supply chain. But I can tell you that we have never had any complaints about the gates belts we are selling. A few year back we got an order for a gates belt and it was shipping to Gates USA head offices. We thought that was strange and of course got a little nervous about it. We never heard anything of it after that. We just assumed maybe they wanted to inspect to see if it was really a belt from one of their manufacturing plants.. "
Second: "I was able to find a link to the gates manufacture in China ( www.gatesunitta.com/en/scooter-belt ) . As you will notice they have different markings on the logo and use the R (not TM). Also you will notice that the slip/packing is not the same as some of the other slips I have seen locally. I personally think they change the logo, print and packing to the buyers requirements. So in other words it seem to me it would impossible to determine if it's real or not with just packing and logo alone.
I found the link through this site.
www.gates.com/regions/asia-pacific then click "Industrial Power Transmission"
Hope this helps.. Let me know if you have anymore question or concerns.. "
So now I have no idea what to make of this. Thoughts? Really - I need help with this.

OK, so I sent a message to Gates with a link to this thread. Hopefully they will respond (unlike Koso - which seems uninterested in supporting people and their products).

I recently saw that package also . the font is different also , a more stylish writing. The belt may be legit . I'd use the Kevlar belt and see how it holds up . it may take a couple yrs until you can post the results , lol. If you order from him again send a message asking for the ones with the sleeve and model numbers.

His response sounds reasonable. And he may be 100% right. I'd only use the gates with the white writing as backups , since the last one broke like it did.

Great thread gang! Lately I've been figuring out how to identify counterfeit Kehin carbs..... With all these counterfeit parts on the market I've discovered there's only one way to be sure you're getting real stock.... That is buy from a reputable dealer (and even that's not always a guarantee)

Yep. DM
The best bet is to go to a 'reputable dealer", but even THAT isn't safe.
We have TWO recent examples now, both from top notch dealers: this possible counterfeit Gates belt issue, and another Koso variator issue, also possibly counterfeit.
