I got my new cap and everything. I can't remember, how do I put the filter thimble looking thing in? Facing up or down? I usually put it in facing down from the top of the spring. Sweet, thanks. So I have been doing it right... What's the point of the filter in these anyways? lol

The filter is designed to catch any debris that could damage your oil pump and other moving parts. Most engines will have some shavings in the oil during the first 500 miles or so, the better the castings, the less shavings.

So how would it "filter" anything? It just seems if it is out of the way how would it filter the oil? It only catches stuff that sinks to the bottom into the cap?

That spring doesn't compress all the way, it just hold the filter against the hole the oil pump draws the oil through. The oil is drawn from the lower part of the crankcase through the filter before going to the pump.

So here's the solution that worked for me in case anyone else has this issue and finds this post.
I tried getting it off for an hour with chiseling and using a vice grip and whatnot, all to no avail. So I then got an idea, it was pretty ground down from using the vice grip so I found a standard socket that was close to the size of what it was at, then I hammered the socket all the way onto the cap and using my socket wrench I was able to get it off, and it even made nice new teeth for the 12 sided socket I used to get on and off again! I replaced the cap with a new cap though, better safe than sorry!
I imagine this trick would work on other stripped bolt heads and similar caps.
