Seriously, a tear down is the only thing I see working for you. I mean taking the plastics off, removing the wheels, removing the front end, and removing the engine. Once that is done, the only part large enough to be difficult to stuff somewhere is the frame, and it could be put between those bicycles on that rack pretty easily and safely, the rest can be stuffed wherever you have space. Otherwise, you're looking at losing money by paying for shipping or modding your hitch + cost of trailer, or selling your scooter and hoping to find a replacement later (you could get lucky and come out ahead with a good sell and smart buy, but that's another discussion).
If I had to spend the money, I would do the hitch modification, it would be worthwhile in the long run.

scooter jerseyboy come to think about it my grandfather is a trucker. He was in Michigan just last week. He only does short runs though. Ill try that route also. I'm not in a huge hurry to use the scoot (even though my scoot and bicycles are the daily drivers and the others are considered toys) but considering I have 3 motorcycles and the car I think I can wait until he has a route down south from his home base in Omaha, NE to drive the scoot again . I'll have to ask him though. Truckers have very stringent rules for GVW and expected loads and he works for a company. He is not independant. javarod Ill look into more LTL companies, I did check uship but Taos is so far out of a standard shipping route it makes for a very expensive trip. JerryScript I am kinda leaning toward the hitch mod but my car is pristine stock and I would like to keep it that way. It seems to be the cheapest other than greyhound so far, or selling my car and buying a truck/van.

The problem isn't the trailer. I have an old snowmobile trailer at my cottage that I can use. The problem is bolting a hitch to my car. The only hitch available for the Ford Contour does not fit my Contour SVT without heavy modification because the SVT model has dual exhaust and ground effects that get in the way. I did order a regular Contour hitch from O'reillys today because they say it will fit all Contours. I know that this isn't true but I can pick it up and use it for measurements and then return it if I cannot make it work without cutting it apart and re-welding it. I also found a perfect condition SVT rear bumper cover nearby that I am going to pick up tomorrow because IF I can make the hitch work I will still have to cut a hole in the bumper mesh for the receiver to pass through. When I get to NM I can take the hitch back off and put the new bumper cover on thus returning the car to stock (and maintaining its value as an unmodified rare car).

howdy, i hope the move is more beneficial than experimental. have you checked into pods where they deliver a box to you address which you fill and they come pick it up and deliver and you unload it where you are moving to. it is i think pretty reasonable and efficient.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Well, It looks like the hitch won't fit. Cutting the muffler tips off will not leave enough material to weld back up and modding the hitch is going to cost a good bit more than I want. I did have an amazing offer from Bandito2 to tow it out there on his trailer with his Silverwing. That would make an epic thread. So, There is a really nice TGB Delivery 50cc on CL Grand Rapids, Michigan right now... I'll just have to get a different scoot down there or a sidecar for my Triumph Bonneville so I can take my pooch on rides.

Taos, NM is pretty far off the map, it's just a ski town. My new job is electrical maintenance tech at one of the resorts there. Even though i'm trying to use off holiday rentals it still runs in the $2000-2500 range to rent a truck. I really want to figure out how to take the scoot. But it seems that it will always cost more than the scoot is worth (not counting sentimental).

Wow! Taos! That's a tiny little town just outside the Arizona border in New Mexico. It has it's own HUM from what I've heard. There's a lot of EARTHSHIPS out there. My wife and I looked into moving there because we're eco-freaks. We liked the idea of getting a small piece of land in Taos or just outside of Taos and building an off grid eco-house. We put the kibosh on the whole idea because we couldn't realistically find work anywhere nearby there to support us. I'm jealous that you're able to make it work there. I love small out of the way towns like that. If you like seclusion, you're going to LOVE Taos.

I'm going to put in one more vote for a complete tear down and stuffing the parts anywhere possible. I just did a body teardown on my new scooter yesterday, one month in and time to double check all those bolts and fasteners. From there, it would have taken me another hour to tear her down to parts that could be stuff all over the place, with only the engine and frame needing any consideration. I still think you could strap the frame between the bikes on your bike carrier very easily and still be safe. Body plastics are stackable, and usually can be shoved in on top of everything else since they are so light, and if it's the scooter in your avatar, doesn't look like plastics are an issue anyway. Tires can be zip tied to the bicycle tires on your roof as well. This leaves the main engine/cvt assembly, and I'm sure you could find space for that somewhere.
I get attached to my rides too, which is why I'm trying to help your figure out a solution. Whatever you do, good luck with your new job, you'll love Taos! And enjoy the trip there with your friends!

I just checked...you can rent a pickup or a full-size cargo van from Enterprise (in Taos, NM!) for a weekend. It will run you about $250 for the weekend (pick it up at noon on Friday, return in by noon on Monday), mileage is unlimited.
