Could be several things, but you have to realize with no load on the motor any motor will rev higher. But I can see why you have a concern if it revs up to 8K on the center stand and only 5500 on the road.

Here are some things that can cause low rpms under load:
1. Weights are to heavy, causing the belt to rise to quickly into the high ratio part of the pulley.
2. Carbs Fuel Mixture not adjusted right(causing loss of power under load)
3. Low compression (motor does not have the power to pull the load).

Now if it just started to happen and it ran good before then you look for things that have changed or could have changed .
But if it always ran that way ever since you got it then I would suspect Heavy weights in the Variator and or Carb not adjusted right.

Your right once again Alley. I have heavy weights and taller gears trying to get best top speed. I have a 150 cc reverse trike and I want to drive down the middle of the road rather than a DUI looking guy hugging the shoulder.
