I've got a typical 150cc Chinese GY6 scooter. Was running great. Then had intermittant problem where it would not start. Apparently no spark. I'd wait a while, try it later and it would start up. Now it's no longer intermittent - the bike won't start. No spark. Replaced CDI, Coil, Spark plug, and stator. Checked battery-frame ground, engine ground, both good. Still no dice.
I don't know why the lights on some scoots turn on once the ignition key is turned but before the engine is started while others will not turn on till the engine actually turns over. My scooter is like this.
My question is: what controls this feature? Is it an electrical component that could have gone bad that is now causing my no spark/no start problem?

Your problem sounds like a short, manifested itself from time-to-time, then became permanent, text-book short circuit. I would trace the wires through the wiring harness (purchase electric tape to re-tape after inspection).
The reason some scooters lights come on with the key, and others with the engine is AC vs DC. If the headlight is AC, it will only come on once the engine is putting out AC current via the stator turning. If it's DC, the battery will power the lights when the key is turned on.

Not to argue anything, however I have a Bintelli Havoc and that is NOT how my main front headlight works. I have a DC system and my light does not come on until I start the engine. Jerry has a good suggestion of inspecting the harness... You have a kill switch, possibly even something as innocuous as kick stand safety switch, there's a bunch of stuff that can cause the symptoms you describe......

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. After I posted my initial post I remembered how/why the AC headlights work the way they do.
I agree that a short is probably the issue. I'll investigate.
Question: what is it that "clicks" sometimes when the ignition key is turned to the 'on' position? Sounds like something is happening somewhere. Thanks!

When talking about a DC and AC system ALL you are saying to someone is whether the CDI is DC or AC fed that is all. ALL STATORS PUT OUT VAC not DC current. The R/R is the one that converts VAC to DC for some of the lighting and whatnot on the scoots.
So If you say you have a DC system all your really saying to someone that knows this stuff is that you have a DC CDI. So If you yourself do not know what in the heck you have Don't be saying mine is a DC system. Not to many 50cc and 150cc scoots Are wired to use a DC CDI. But to clear it up in your mind TURN THE KEY ON and test the BOTTOM WIRE on the 2 plug of your CDI if it registers 12volts you have a DC CDI and you can then say you have a DC system. Or you can trace the wire back and see where the power is coming from. If it is a DC CDI the power will be coming from the IGNITION SWITCH,
Now my Ice Bear Trike is AC, BUT EVERYTHING is powered by the Battery the only thing the R/R is doing on mine is Charging the battery and that is it.
I can turn the KEY ON and the gauges activate, on my right hand grip there is a LIGHT button has 3 positions, All the way to the right if off, 1 click left(MIDDLE) turns on my Instrument panel lights and running lights, All the way to the Left turns on my Headlights.
So I run with just running lights back and front since I do not ride at night and do not need the headlights. Alleyoop

I am the only one in this thread that stated they have a "DC system" so I'm assuming your comment is aimed towards me? Even though my stator produces AC, for all intense purposes it is a DC system. AC systems can run without the battery, DC can not. When I first joined this forum, I was in fact under the impression that my stator was a generator, but I quickly learned otherwise. At this point however, I have learned the in and outs of the way a scooter makes it juice. So, I'm not sure if you're talking to me or not, but I do know "how the heck" these electrical systems work. I could build an entire harness for a scooter at this point. There are many different threads with the ole debate, which is better, AC or DC.... While it's true the main difference is the method in which the plug gets it's spark, the operational differences are there as well. Long story short, when I first hit these forums I was looking for this kind of info and many people told me the same thing, If the main head light comes on with key, it's DC. If it comes on with engine start, it's AC. JerryScript told the author of this thread to test his setup like that and I was chiming in for the sole reason of saying that is not a good test. I have a DC CDI and my headlight does not come on unless the engine is started.

No don't get paranoid on me(haha), What I posted was to Clarify what is considered a DC and AC system, most folks do not know what it means when someone asks them is your scoot DC or AC. I also neglected to mention that on a DC system if you disconnect the battery or you have a bad battery your motor will not run. As far as how the lights work that came about due to EPA regulations for safety reasons. They required them to not be able to turn them off and have them come on automatically when the motor started to produce electricity. On some of the later scoots you will find that the Light Switch is still on the right hand grip but it does nothing. Alleyoop
