Hi,
I had a question. My electric starter started spinning and grinding so I attempted to start via kick start which would not work either (the engine will not start). I pulled the clutch cover and found that approximately 6 teeth were broken off the bendix starter clutch where the electric starter motor gears connect to. I understand that this is what is causing my electric start problems, but could this also prevent the engine from turning over with the kick start?
Thanks, Adam

No, if they broke there is a reason and I think your motor is binding inside due to something broke and not letting it turn the crank so I think it is time to take the top off the motor and check and see what is broke. Alleyoop

I may have misunderstood what you meant when you said it will not start with the kick starter. Can you turn the Variator COUNTER CLOCKWISE by hand and feel when it is on the compression stroke and can you keep turning it past the compression stroke? OR you cannot ROTATE the Variator with your hands?
I assumed that the kick starter was not turning the crank which would mean something internal in the motor is binding. Alleyoop

The variator rotates and the kick starter turns the engine over but it won't start. It really all started with changing my main jet to a . Ran, then wouldn't start the next day. Pushed the electric start too long and I think due to that, broke the teeth due to more strain with increased compression of the 83cc kit. Swapped a fouled plug and still won't kick over. Wondering if the broken starter clutch is preventing the engine from running even though im kicking it over. Thanks, Yellowjacket

Ah , sorry so I did misunderstand. OK there are several types of electric starter gears on the 50s. (A) 1 just has a BENDIX and the starter spins it and the Bendix extends and engages the teeth on the Fan Pulley Drive Face to turn the crank (B) Some have an actual Starter clutch like the 150+ motors but behind the Variator , it has a gear and a centrifugal clutch bolted to the gear .
If "A" then the kick starter would NOT BE EFFECTED. If "B" it would depend if the kick starter ALSO engaged the gear with the broken teeth OR if it engaged the outside of the Fan Pulley Drive then "NO the kick starter should work". Alleyoop

Thanks Alleyoop! It's A and I ordered a new one coming Monday. You're comment is very helpful, saving me alot of time diagnosing other things while I attempt to kickstart. Much appreciated!

Yellow I mistyped (A) IF "A" the kickstarter SHOULD STILL WORK, because the kickstarter engages the Fan Pulley Drive Gear from the outside and not the teeth like the bendix(SORRY). So if it does not kickstart then 1. Check for spark Ground the plug on the valve cover or motor(NOT THE FRAME) if it sparks then 2. Check for fuel getting to the carb If fuel is getting to the carb then Squirt some gas into the Intake and see if it at LEAST fires once if SO then we know it is a fuel delivery problem.

Hey alley, So I went at it this weekend. Replaced the starter clutch. Wouldn't start until I eventually held my hand over the air intake and felt gas, guess it was having a vacuum issue but after that it worked fine. I later replaced the air filter with a high flow and a exhaust. I was really surprised to find that the largest jet i had (100) still turned the plug white. I drilled it out to a 105. Runs fine but hopefully its still not lean. I did another plug chop but couldn't tell too well as I ran out of new plugs. The only other issue I notice is that the kick starter raises slowly after pressed when before it would just bounce right back.
