Leo, you shouldn't be talking too loud about Chinese names. Gee, what's the original name for YOUR scooter? >'Kat, proudly driving what the rest of the world calls a Beverly....

Leo, you shouldn't be talking too loud about Chinese names. Gee, what's the original name for YOUR scooter? >'Kat, proudly driving what the rest of the world calls a Beverly.... Kat,
You're RIGHT! In the rest of the world, my Grandvista (yeah, all ONE word)... was the "Grand Dink"... For Canada, it was the "Grand View"... Never got to Canada though... Some of my locals call her "The Dinkster"... The name "Dink" (Double Income No Kids) was an American "thing" back in the seventies, so the Taiwanese picked it up for their new scooter... about 3 decades late...
The name originated back with "Yuppies" "Yuppie Puppies" and all that stupid stuff, and apparently stuck around Europe and Asia for some time... Cheesh!
I suppose the Chinese names are not as bad as some of the early Japanese ones... Like the "Silver Pigeon" "Wombat" and "Benevolent Sparrow". Now the very good 1970's line by Hodaka, with the big seller being their "Wombat" offered up a competition version, called the "Combat Wombat"... THAT was sorta cool... Maybe?
Way, WAY back around the late sixties, China made a truly imaginative attempt to import a scooter. I was only 14 or so, but I recall seeing them mail-order, in "Popular Mechanics" and "Boy's Life" magazines. The "Red Star"... A steel, clutch n' gears 2-stroke stone-age copy of a Vespa. I think 49cc. I actually saw ONE bought by a nerdy pal... It was painted a chalky WWI-era olive-drab, with (of course) a huge red star, brush-painted on the front mud-shield.
It cost something like $129 delivered, and took about a year to arrive. I don't recall him EVER getting it to run. It was AWFUL. Maybe WORSE than awful... But, it DID come with a copy of Mousey Tongue's "Little Red Book"... And, a hard-sell brochure on becoming a Communist, and making America into a "worker's paradise"... The English translation was actually BETTER than today's scooter manuals.
Not much incentive to turn Chinese, and go Communist with that ride I'd say... The Chairman's message fell on deaf ears...
Somewhere, in a long forgotten barn, there must be at least ONE of those Red Stars rusting away. Might be worth something today... Nah... probably not... LOL!
Ride safe... Give "Bev" a hug and should you ever ride Chinese... certain be for safety much appreciating the moped's strong features for loving goodness and harmonious clutchings for rabbit accelerating and disk-hoof for much stopping appropriation...

.....Chingresh is one of my favorite things on Earth, and it's always hilarious to me to see their renditions of what might be "cool" English. I wonder if our popular Chinese & Japanese kanji are as amusing to those respective people, haha.... I have actually spewed my soda all over my computer thanks to some really strange Chingresh! They really do make an attempt though, they honestly want to understand how to market things American style, using our slang. There is a young lady on youtube who learned Chinese as a teenager. If I remember right, she had big plans for being a translator, but they fell through. She ended up making a series of videos that explain young American culture to the Chinese, and she has millions of views (and made her money). Her most popular video was about what we call the stuff that comes out of pimples believe it or not!
