I've decided to start taking a more tuned care of my scooter. I was using it as my sole transportation. I now appreciate the importance of taking care of your ride. And besides its fun to understand how something works!! Most people glance at a machine and see spaghetti. They see that because today we are separated from our technology. We're taught to think that its our natural right or possession, like for example its just something that's there. All we need is money and it will take care of the rest. umm yea rant up in here, Not wasting anymore of your time lets jump right into it, So I'm scootless at the moment, My variator broke. The drive face teeth were ground out. Which i think might have been caused by the wrong belt size. Bought a whole new variator assembly cause it was at a good price. Got it back on and it looks good. I had starting problems when I found out my drive face broke and I still have them now. Went through the carburetor everything looks clean. I clean it out on somewhat of a regular basis adjusting things. Pulled the intake manifold up to look in the engine and its still nice and silver on the inside. Pulled out the spark plug and got spark up next to a bolt. I've installed a performance cdi along with a new coil wire and spark plug. Pulled the fuel IN hose to the carb and watched fuel come out when i turned the engine. So there's spark, fuel, and I guess the next test would be compression, but I'm limited with this field of troubleshooting. I also haven't replaced the stator/magneto yet, but that makes me think I wouldn't have spark If that was the case? So yea, got a starting problem and I've checked for fuel and spark and there good. What next? Thanks

Try to kick start it. You can try a little starting fluid. Open the throttle, Spray in the air box and let off the throttle. Key on roll it over and open the throttle. If it starts and dies it is a gas issue.

When trying to start does it attempt to start or nothing just turns over and over and does not fire once? If so do that again and then take the plug out and see if it is WET OR DRY. If Wet the plug is not firing in the motor, If Dry no gas is being sucked into the motor. Alleyoop

pauldog - I've tried starter fluid with no change in crank, normally that makes it catch for at least a second but now it doesn't seem to effect it. And I don't have a kickstart no mo alleyoop - It doesn't act like its about to catch. It just turns over and over even when i jiggle the throttle. I'll try that wet spark plug trick though and post back!

How wet would you say? I pulled it out and polished it clean and it seemed a little moist after. But not really saturated.
Is it normal to here a clicking sound while starting? I pulled off the stator cover off to have a look at it but I haven't removed the fly wheel or anything.
The clicking just seems more pronounced then it use to.

Clicking sound while cranking it over, sounds like something is arching, do that in the dark and see if you can see where it is arching at. If it is arching someplace you will see the electrical flashs. Also look down the spark plug it may be arching in the hole. So look for flashs along the coil by the coil by the boot cap and down the spark plug hole. Alleyoop

If you see spark it would at least try, especially with starter fluid. You have gas flowing if you plug is even the slightest bit wet. Next is compression. First tings first, check your valves lash clearance. They both should be around. 003-.005 with the exhaust slightly open more than the intake. they need to be al least .001 +,- to each other. Once thats done take your plug out and put your finger over the hole and crank it with the electric start. Unless you have super strength compression should push past your finger. If not you can pin point your problem to being in the head or cylinder area. The does the clicking noise only happen while using the electric starter or while it was running to? Your transmission(Variator, belt, and clutch) have nothing to do with the bike running. You could remove all 3 and still have it run. Also, the teeth on the drive face are only for the electric starter, If they were damaged is a 99% chance your starter bendix it damaged too. The electric starter spins the bendix which spins the drive face witch is connected to the crankshaft that spins with the engine. If there is a problem this and poorly adjusted valves will cause a no start. Bad adjustment causes hard starts and poor running and dying at lights. Poor starting + a weakened start due to whatever is going on in the cvt would deff cause a no start.

I'll take a look in the dark, it does seem to me like a mechanical click, starter bendix you say? I have laid it over on the cvt side before. Not to hard just drove off the stand and fell over.
Still waiting on my valve measure tools, any way to check this starter bendix?

Arching is when electricity is jumping out from someplace it sounds like clicking. Well the best thing is to get a Video of you trying to start it and see if we can hear how it sounds or what sounds it is making. But if the plug was wet and it did not fire then that tells you the plug is not firing in the motor. Where did you test for spark? You have to test for spark while holding the plug on the valve cover or the motor itself. If you test on the frame that is not good enough. If the motor is not grounded or has a bad ground from the motor to the frame the plug will not fire while in the motor. Alleyoop

alleyoop I think you called that one, it's not actually sparking over the valve cover. So i guess I have a ground problem

Great, that is an easy fix just get a good size wire and connect one end to the top of one of the valve cover bolts and then go to the Frame, give the ground wire some slack the motor moves the frame does not. Alleyoop
