Just making sure JOHN, people do make mistakes. I had one on PROF that the WOODRUFF key was inside the flywheel stuck on one of the magnets he did not even notice the woodruff key missing. Also wondering why it was taken off and put back on as well, no explanation why it was taken off in the first place. People do not explain what and why or ask before tearing things apart they come on asking for help after the fact. And in order to tell them what is wrong we need to know what was done and why to backtrack and see if something was done wrong. Alleyoop

HUH!! "the above is why he replaced the engine cover" what does that mean, a picture of a the side panel off and no exhaust is not a reason to take the flywheel off and stator and what not. But it needs an exhaust on it otherwise you may not get it to start.

What does the woodruff key look like. When I put the flywheel back on I say a slight raised keyway looking mark on the shaft and I slid the flywheel (which looked like it had a groove to match the raised keyway on the shaft) back on? Is there actually another piece that slide in the flywheel groove as well?
Yes I have mounted the muffler.
Thanks for the help

Yeah I definitely do not have that. Must have not seen it when I disassembled. Could that be the problem?

Thanks for the help Ah, ok that explains it JOHN, why the stator and side cover was taken off, thanks. If someone had said my right side cover behind the stator broke then it would have explained it right off the bat. Badpenny, Yes that protruding piece of metal in a slot on the crankshaft is the woodruff key and the flywheel has a slot that slides over it and locks the flywheel in that position. If the woodruff key was missing or damaged it would throw the timing off. Alleyoop

So I couldn't find the woodruff key, but this is what everything looks like: Is the key still in there? Because there is a protrusion on the shaft?

Any thoughts on getting the worn woodruff key out of the shaft without damaging the shaft?

Yep the woodruff key is worn down and only a hair is sticking up on the outside not enough to hold the flywheel in position. Also you can see a little damage on the flywheel. Alleyoop
