Hi again! So after a few weeks of running great, and about 500 miles of riding, I attempted to start the scooter today and it won't start. I noticed it's making a loud clicking noise when I try to start it. I recorded the clicking sound:

I should also say, in case it makes a difference, I've been leaving it outside in the rain, uncovered.

Take the plug out and turn it over, I do not like that sound it is not a clicking sound it sounds like something is snapping shut. Take the valve cover off and check the VALVES. Alleyoop

I took the plug out and tried to start it, the banging noise went away. To me, it sounds like the sound is coming from the CVT. I opened up the CVT cover and took over the Variator to make sure it wasn't the weights making the noise but everything seems fine there. One thing I noticed is the sound is louder with the CVT cover off...
I haven't checked the valves yet because I have to take off a bunch of stuff to get to it.

I think something is not right with the valves, reason is you said with the plug out the noise went away the compression is relieved. To me it sounds like something is snapping shut or leaking bad.

Ok I will get to the valves tonight. One thing, when I was trying to start it with the cvt cover off, it almost turned over but made a loud noise like metal snapping.

OUCH!! not good, did you notice if you were maybe running lean? Any different sounds from the motor the last time you were riding at any point in the throttle range? Alleyoop

The end of the spark plug was black and the black rubbed off onto my fingers.

OILY or DRY SOOTY, If sooty that is just overly rich if oily then rings are suspect. Alleyoop

Pretty sure it was just sooty.
Going to tackle the valve cover now.

Great and look around for any broken parts or anything that does not look right. While the cover is off rotate the motor over by hand so you can see how the rockers and Valves are working. Alleyoop

They look alright from the top, Check the gap on them, bring it up and align the two little holes on the cam sprocket even with the head and check the gaps.

Top and bottom are set to 004. The bottom is slightly looser than the top, you could get an 005 in there if you really force it, but I think they are ok.

Also, it looks like I need to replace the shaft that the variator sits on. I completely stripped it last night. Is that even replaceable?
