Hello everyone,
I have a 2009 Shanghai Beta, 4 stroke 50cc scooter. I bought it new and its about 4000 miles on it now. It normally sits in the winter and sat all of last year. I changed the oil, cleaned the carb a few times, adjusted valves a few times. I just purchased a few new belts, new variator fan and new 5g rollers.
To the point: I have no spark. I only have a test light, and i'm getting no light from hardly any wire except the battery, even while cranking. I am getting light while cranking from.. I think a Green and Yellow wire, I don't know where it goes(somewhere to the front of the bike).
I tested with the test light The CDI=no light from any wire, even while cranking, Ignition Coil(the 2 wires on the top)=no light, even while cranking. The Stator=no light while cranking, but only once briefly and dim from the Black and Red wire and only when I kicked it(and not the electric starter) and it didn't light again when I tried to kick it a few more times.
I checked my spark plug and its ok. Took apart and cleaned my carburetor and its flowing gas. I jumped my run/stop switch. Tightened up my kick stand kill switch(it was loose) and verified that its still pushing the little kill switch up and down.
I'm stumped. Please Help
Side note: Also the about a year or so after I got it the head light and the tail light went out. Only the side head head lights work(its a three light system, 1 main light and 2 side lights in the main head light glass) but not the main head light, the tail isn't lighting up either only the thin top strip when I hit the brakes, the whole thing used to light up. I heard this as something to do with the stator?
Brief History: It sat for about a 9 months to a year, it ran so-so before I put it up(not going as fast anymore and slow take off)I adjusted the valves a bunch of times and it didn't really fix it like it did when I first adjusted them a year or two prior. During that time I had starting/no spark issues so I took it to a shop when valve adjustments wouldn't solve my problem anymore. I don't remember if it was my Ignition coil, CDI, Stator or whatever, all I remember is when I went to pick it up, it was running and the mechanic wasn't there for me to talk to so I just left. I recall my run/stop switch wasn't turning off my bike anymore but I thought nothing of it, I just used the key to turn the bike off and was going to go back to the shop later when I had the time(I never did). The bike ran but never really as fast as it did when I first bought it. I drove it home on the expressway when I first got it and it was flying to the max needle point (45-50) with no problems(on a side note how can I get it like this again? Is it possible?).

Yes it is possible to get it to run good. But you need a MULTI METER to test your electrics. A 12v Light Tester only will test things that require 12volts and cannot be used to test VAC from the stator. You can pick up a multi meter at any hardware or harbor freight for under 10 dollars and to test things on your scoot you need one.
Also where was it sitting for that period of time, in a place where mice or rodents could have gotten to it? They love to chew on wires and make nests in the muffler etc..
A 12V Light test is good for checking if voltage is getting to any of your lights and or gauges that is about the extent for using a 12v light tester on a scoot. The rest COIL, CDI, PICKUP COIL and Stator you need a multi meter.

Thanks Alley, you helped me fix my scooter when I had the valve problem a few years ago(don't know if you remember) I do have access to a multimeter, I'll get it in a few minutes. Please let me know what/how I have to test. I really need to get running ASAP. It's actually kinda an emergency that my scoot is running right now. Thanks so much for your time and knowledge, it has been truly golden to me.

Here you go an excellent Video for testing what part is the culprit: First make sure you have a GOOD GROUND from the motor to the FRAME otherwise the testing will be for NOT. Also make sure your killswitch is on the run position and if your sidestand has a killswitch the side stand is up. Alleyoop

Do the basics , valve lash . Check/replace vac lines . Do the electrical checks .

Alright, I purchased a nice multimeter today. My battery is not good as it used to be, I think, so i'm using jumper cables from my jeep for power to crank the bike during testing. I heard that this could give me a false reading on the multi. Is this true? And if so, can you give me a few pointers on the best way to test? Meanwhile i'm studying the video tonight and ill be testing in the morning. Thanks

Please Help, I don't know what to make of all of it, I think maybe its the stator but I really don't know Thanks in advance for all your help. Multi-meter test results - 50cc 4 stroke Shanghai Beta (no spark) All test were done using his (guy in the video) recommended settings to the multi-meter *Note: all my Grounds at the CDI were fine.Black and White wire on the CDI from the run/stop switch with the ignition key turned to on doesn't beep (ground) with the run/stop switch clicked on or off. Only when I turn the ignition key off it beeps (ground) either way I switch it (I already knew this switch was faulty and I had to use the key to turn the bike off) Red and Black wire from the CDI heading into the stator coil reads .344 lower than he said it should which was between 430-630. Pick up coil resistance: Red and White wire which is Blue and White coming from the stator to the CDI does nothing to the meter. The primary… Black and Yellow wire on the CDI that goes to the coil showed .6 from the CDI to ground and .4 from the back of the coil ( Black and Yellow) to ground. I tested the front/ Green wire also on the coil and got .2 Crank test Black and Red wire on the CDI while cranking gives me 34.5 volts he said it should be between 65-90v ac The Red and White wire while cranking shows me .056 Resistance test From the bottom of the spark plug wire to the top terminals of the ignition coil is 7.86 with meter set to 20k

If you did the tests correctly the stator is shot. Alleyoop

Thanks a million alley, I figured this. How do I figure out which stator to buy? And what is best or are they all the same?
On a side note: About the head and tail light... Will these work again when I replace the stator?

They should unless the R/R is blown due to the bad stator. You will have to look at the STATOR that is on there bud, make sure the wires on the one you buy MATCHS the wires on your current one. THEY have so many that it is very easy to get the wrong one and they will not REFUND or EXCHANGE electrical parts. Is your motor a 139QMB or a 1P39QMB or what motor is in there, the motor type is what you will need to get the right stator for it also make sure it comes with a NEW PICKUP COIL. Alleyoop

Look on the case by the SIDESTAND it will be itched on the case. Just the number and letter on top the bottom numbers are the numbers of motor(COUNT) means nothing.

My model is a 139QMB, I'll make sure to match up the three wire adapter plug(green, white and yellow) And make sure it comes with the pick up coil.
I got the everything off except the flywheel. I got the nut off(no pun intended) lol But I need a flywheel puller. I went to pep boys about five times trying different tools but I think I'll have to order one off eBay, I really didn't want to wait for a delivery but they didn't have what I needed. The one they had that's close to what I saw on eBay didn't have the reversed threads to screw in.
Is there any other tool you know of that I can get from pep boys?
