Don't know about falling apart however it could be out of balance now which could impact the longevity of crank bearings and seals.

It looks like paint in the picture . I will send you a replacement . Your here asking about it . Continue then let me know what you would like to do . Please do not hesitate to install it and try it . It will have no bearing on replacement . If the back plate is smooth and free movement go for it.

John yeah, it's hard to tell from the pics but it is definitely a chip. i mean i would prefer one in perfect condition since i doubt i will know if it's an issue until it's too late. idk, perhaps i'm just paranoid.

Great to see a company stand behind its products and offer to allow you to try then return if needed.
That's being said yes if it's chipped I'd replace it.
Again my .02

That is why your usually better off dealing with a forum sponsor.. As items do get damaged in shipping it is usually best to give them a chance to correct things before posting about it although I do understand the need to touch base to see if your over reacting.
Checking out the smoothness/evenness of the drive faces with a steel rule would be a good start however there would always be a nagging doubt that it could be dynamically out of balance and a few months down the line if an oil seal starts leaking, shaft snaps, etc there will be some degree of doubt whether the damaged variator was the root cause.

John's awesome! How many other vendors find a post about a defective part they sent, and doesn't get defensive about it, and just says, "hey man, I'll send you another, don't worry 'bout it"... The only other vendor I've seen do that was scooter elements when Walter was running the show. I don't do a whole lot with scooters anymore, but John is on my short list for scooter parts. I also like Mainey and I have purchased quite a bit from scrappy's.
