The Vento scooters were Chinese made and assembled in Mexico, if memory serves. I had planned on buying one before they went out of business.

The Japanese turned to Ireland for manufacturing power tools and has been following wherever the best bang for the buck labor is (not always the cheapest) so it has become quite fluid. Walmart was probably one company that did more than many others to force manufacturers to go offshore if they wanted to continue doing business with them. In the Reagan years it was the Federal Government that probably made the biggest push offshore as they would send advisers that actually instructed growing companies to get rid of their local work force and hire offshore. So yes its interesting to see how things change over time isn't it.
