howdy, I just got back from a little trip to England, Ireland, Israel, and spain. it is totally amazing the numbers of scooters/motorcycles in other countries. the only thread I see is the cost of fuel. where it costs more there are more scooters. the other thread is where the streets are crowded and parking non-existant, there are more scooters.
how come there are so few members of this forum from these countries?
another thing that changes as the number of scooters goes up is the filtering of two wheelers between the 4 wheelers. even at high speed the scooters in Israel and spain will go between and around cars and trucks or ride the shoulder to filter around. at stops they will filter between stopped vehicles and around to the front of the line and go when the light turns green. here that might get you shot but there it is part of the driving experience.
comments?
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

I think you are on the right track to assume scooter popularity rises with crowded roads and expensive fuel prices. Lack of available parking space and rising parking costs also increases their popularity. -I think CA is the only state where white lining is legal. It was back when I lived there. -We don't get a lot of forum members from Europe and Asia because scooters are so common there. They have their own forums on other continents for their enthusiasts.

Yep, in the home of PC you can at least "filter"

Scooters here are a novelty/recreational vehicle . Over there its thier only form of transportation. Being ya got to be well off to own /drive a car. A few buddies of mine from the UK. Pay monthly to drive a car what I pay for my home mortgage. That would put me on a scooter fast!

Back in the 80s when I was stationed in Germany, gas was over $6 a gallon, and that was with a decent exchange rate. We have been spoiled by cheap gas in the USA for decades. The rest of the world is used to paying a much higher prices than we are, and have adjusted their driving styles accordingly. The rise of the electric vehicle is going to be very interesting to watch over the next decade. From cars to bikes, everything is going electric, even Harley Davidson just announced an electric bike (which will be in the new Avenger's movie), but I have a feeling the USA will be left behind in a few years even though we are currently leading the way.

The Harley is not a planned production model though and just a show piece to prove they could do it. The may release a production model sometime in the future depending on feedback however the one they are touring on is very limited in range.
In many European countries you also have more strict polution and noise regulations for vehicles used inside the city limits Euro3 and Euro4 and if what you are riding/driving does not meet those standards then you have to leave it parked outside of town and hoof it or rent a bicycle.
The Sport City I ride meets the Euro3 standard and can be ridden within most city and town limits.

Tons of scooters here in Panama , and the normal motorcycle is usually under 200 cc , what drives most here is cost .for example the average girl working in a shoe store makes about $15 a DAY . A machanic or welder about $4 a hour . Yet your average Kotomi sunracer twist and go 150 cc scooter is $1400 . In panama city it would be the best thing for travel as traffic is bad . A million people in a city that should only have 1/2 million . Fuel runs about $4 US gallon
