Taking your mirrors off is a big mistake, and in many places illegal! You actually have given yourself a much wider blind spot now, since we're not owls, and can not bend our neck 180 degrees. You're not only not aware of the traffic behind you, you also are unable to see traffic between 140 and 180 degrees behind you. Also, you're forced to look behind you longer, which is really dangerous when someone stops right in front of you.

Also, you're forced to look behind you longer, which is really dangerous when someone stops right in front of you. Indeed! You need every tool in your arsenal and the mirrors are a major one. Removing them altogether is a really bad idea and could get you a ticket in many places.
