Hello I Have a 2011 Tao Tao w/a 100cc/50mm BBK new HP coil replaced cracked intake manifold still has stock carb and jet is stock as well. Its not completely broken in yet as for the rings. I took it for a test run yesterday and idle was good throttle was responsinve. all good for a short time of a longer 5 mile run didnt go so well and i think it's the CDI. Here are the symptoms: On the way back from the 5 mile run was about half throttle and started losing power slowly slower slower yet... a consistant slowing down not a sudden pop or sputter or anything like that. but then it eventually died. so I popped my trunk off and overlooked everything everything looked good to me. let it sit for a few 5 mins then it started right up and i made it back home That was the stock CDI unit. later i went for another 5 mile run and it did the same thing so i switched to the performance CDI and got it started but it didnt start easy and it bearly started but its ran good all the way back with no problems. CDI STATS: Stock CDI 43 mph via GPS starts easy idle's lower then the performance CDI, long rides it overheats or burns out. Performance CDI top speed 45.28 mph via GPS starts extremely hard unless a squirt of starter fluid is used idles higher then the stock . Im considering buying another CDI unit Ive always had problems with CDI units it seems they are super weird. My question is what would you do or check because maybe its something elese im missing? I think the performance one advances too much at start and is why it starts so hard. maybe i need a new fresh battery but my battery is still ok but goes pretty dead if you have to keep crankin it. the stock one is definatly shot or gettin there fast. I need something durable and easy start at min. Also what causes them to go out? is there something im missing? thanks for reading my thread and your input is apreciated .

how long ago was the bbk installed? i would suspect it is over heating. need to change the jet imo. the cdi's usually quit without notice and once they are fried they won't work again.

You should have up jetted staring with jet and try tuning it. Then move up a jet size until you fine the one you can tune correct.

Yes you are overheating it when running at high rpms put in a bigger main jet before you fry the motor. with a 100cc bbk an main jet would be the smallest you may need a bigger one than an # . Alleyoop

Pull your plug and inspect the porcelain inside the threads. I'm betting it's white as snow indicating too lean, you want a nice brown coffee color. I had to go up to a on my 50mm bbk in order to get good color on the plug, and resolve bogging at wot. If you are using the stock main jet, you could be so lean you are overheating on those long WOT rides. I would closely inspect the head where it sits on the head gasket and be sure nothing is damaged. Your performance cdi is most likely an advanc ed angle model, these can be hard on startup due to the RPMs being so low. Once your RPMs are at normal levels, the advanced angle improves performance. If you want to get another cdi, I highly recommend the advanc ing angle cdi that tvnacman sells (see his banner above, or search for his username and PM him). It starts with no advance, and only advances as the RPMs increase, preventing kickback (hard starts), and still giving increased performance.

sure you motor is overheating its running in. Batteries get hot when charging and CDIs get hot too I shifted my CDI out of the battery box away from the heat of the battery and it run cooler by feeling it by hand

I have an advancing CDI that comes on around 3K and is retarded for starting. I have 3 performance CDIs that are fixed from the get go and was creating hard starts and kickbacks on me messing up my Starter Clutch. I got the advancing CDIs TWO of them from JOHN(TVNACMAN). If you miss the little extra power and want easy starts I recommend the Advaning CDI I got from John. Pm him and he will set you up. Alleyoop

Alleyoop i agree and theres another thread round here supporting this and moving the CDI out of the battery box

Yep, two things you want to have some kind of air around them and that is the CDI and the R/R. Alleyoop
