Hello, all. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads/responds to my first post!
I'd like to say that I've been a frequent reader at ScootDawg forums and since registration is closed over there, I'm assuming this is "where it's at" these days... Please bear with me as my first post will be quite a "doosy" as they say...
SO... I have purchased a 49cc Gorilla Motor Works RX-50 moped off of Craigslist for $400. Yes, I know, bad idea to begin with...
It was purchased from Ride Green in Winter Park originally, and their head mechanic named told me that "ALL 50cc stators are compatible with ALL other 50cc scoots," and that "Stators do NOT go bad!"
I mean, I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure there's a difference between AC and DC fired stators?
The biggest problem, was that the battery would just not stay charged.
I have fixed the electric start (bad starter motor), and replaced the stator in an attempt to fix the charging issue.
Well, the stator that I replaced the original with was from a 50cc found on craigslist's *free* section. A multimeter on the battery showed that the new stator was actually charging the battery, and "thank God" I said to myself. Problem solved, right? Or so I thought.
I took her for a test drive after installing the new stator. Out of NOWHERE, half way through my drive, the dash lights came on for the first time, the running light came on for the first time, however, she was idling allllll over the place, RPM was fluctuating like crazy and... this is the kicker: she only reached a top speed of 30 MPH! So I checked the spark.
Grounding out the spark plug reveals the spark to be a weak, yellow spark, but not "erratic." The ignition coil has been replaced, and so has the CDI. Still, weak spark and no luck at fixing the engine misses.
Ok, now this is where the story gets interesting:
I took the scoot (driving 20-30MPH the whole way there) down to Ride Green where it was originally purchased, and the "head mechanic" named 'Cookie' sold me a BRAND new stator, a stator that was supposed to match the GMW RX-50 that HE originally sold, so there's no excuse for it not to be a match...
So I installed the thing, and now, I get NO SPARK! I'm at a loss. I have no idea what to check next or how in the world a brand new, in the box stator won't produce a spark, and YES, I'm positive that it's wired correctly! I have a BRAND new CDI, the only thing I have yet to change out in the ignition system is the Regulator, however that doesn't explain why a brand-spanking-new Stator will not produce a spark, whereas a crappy old stator pulled from a bike which I don't even know is a match, performed better than the new one. This is starting to KILL me. I've put over $800 into this thing in parts, a mechanic, and registration to make it run, and to make it legal, and now it won't start. I've had it for less than two months!
For the love of God, please, help me!
(-_-) <me being sick of this nonsense
Thanks again to anyone who reads/responds.
