I'm getting a 50cc. I intend to mod it so I'd need a scooter that can be modded fairly easily (i.e. availability and cost of mod parts).

Just bought and '09 Zuma. Thing is in such good shape for it's age. Miles aren't crazy (500) but he babied this thing. Now I'm terrified the thing's just gonna completely fall apart, hahaha.
One thing he mentioned was that the scooter hadn't been started in about a month before I test rode it today and hadn't been started for three months before that, so it had been doing a lot of sitting. Are there things I should do to it given that it's sat for so long? I added some oil and some gas just incase, but I noticed that it was very, very smoky riding it. White to grey thick smoke. Could this just be an effect of it sitting or does it hint at a bigger problem?

You may want to drain and flush the fuel tank and put fresh fuel. Add the recommended amount of sea foam to the tank once filled freshly and it will likely all be good after that...

The 2T version ? If you yes they burn oil so they smoke , more so at start up . When I was a young teen I used any 2t oil and some would leave a com trail . The premium oils smoke at start up on a cold engine but hardly at all when warm

Its best to actually drain it by pulling the fuel line. Otherwise you run more crap through the system. Running it empty is ok but not ideal

I would drain out the tank and the bowl on the carb . I use Maxxima Pro 2T synthetic blend oil since its good and only ten a quart . I have also used Motul 710 full synthetic but yikes its 17 a quart . It should smoke at start up more so when then engine is cold more so in the winter . Never get Lucas 2T oil is separates . I was reading on www.epa.gov and they said gas with ethanol only has a day shelf life and can absorb water 20xs more than has with out . Pure gas can last up to a year depending on conditions . I bought a hand crank siphon pump from Harbor Freight for 5 bucks when I was out riding in the country and bought gas at a shady place instead of a trusted source . I used the watered gas to light a bon fire . yes Seafoam is great ! . Pour some in will clean out any residue and if you give your scooter a sip often it will keep it clean . Note on 2T oil look for injector safe as " premix only" is thicker . My scooter dealer bought a used Zuma with a 70cc BBK , 19mm Delorto ( may be spelled wrong ) carb and a Leo Vince HM70 pipe . It is a wheelie popper , very peppy and the LV pipe has a great sound and not so darn loud like my PM Racing pipe which sounds like a Honda CR 80 . On a 2T you just remove the exhaust and fan shrouds to get to the engine . The head has 4 nuts on studs and the cylinder slides off . I know with 500 miles there is no need as of yet since it should last a long time but just trying to help you out in case you decide to put on a BBK later . I like to use NGK BRPHIX sparkplug since it is the iridium version . Standard is ok but iridium fires better and less likely to need cleaning from oil build up . Look here to see if you get gas in your area without ethanol pure-gas.org/All small engines should be allowed a warm up time prior to riding more on a 2T and again in winter . A tuned pipe will do wonders for a 2T after upjetting the carb . Post a picture of your new toy .

Hey all, so I fired her up again his morning and let the engine warm up for about 15 minutes, then rode it medium-hard for about 4 miles and the smoke issue seems to have gone away. I'm guessing it was just deposits from sitting and/or working its way through the old gas. I'm still planning on hitting it with some Sea Foam though on fillups.
Incidentally I unintentionlly ran it dry so I guess I dont have to worry about draining the gas now. As for filling her back up, I checked to see if there were any places to get ethanol free gas near me and there weren't. Short of ethanol-free, would it be at all beneficial to get super premium gas (the expensive ) vs regular (the cheap )?

BP premium seems to be a pretty popular choice for scooters.

I only use premium gas . My dealer makes customers sign a paper to only use premium during the PDI . Your only getting a gallon so what if its 20 cent more . I like to go where each grade of gas has its own hose so I do not get any 87 left in the line by previous customer . I would remove and clean the spark plug tip with some carb spray if it looks oily . Make sure to get 2T oil made for scooters and motorcycles as Lawnboy oil is designed to be used at steady RPM instead of the higher RPMs a scooter can hit . It always good to see smoke at start up so you know its getting oil . Always top off the oil tank when you get gas .
I learned about Bel Ray MC 1 and full synthetic premix only oil and the iridium plugs as I already knew NGK is the only brand to use on motorcycles but I had not heard of the iridium . I had been using what ever was the cheapest since I was a teen and used my own money I made mowing yards . I noticed how my buddies motorcycle barely smoked at strt up and did not leave a com trail like I did . I also had to clean the sparkplug every 3 months . The iridium does not make it go faster but it start have better starts and it runs better too .

Unless your scooter has high compression there is no benefit to using higher octane. In fact it may perform poorly. I would try the low octane first and if you hear pinging move up a grade. Scooters are for the most part designed to be operated in countries with less than ideal conditions and many only need 87. But who cares what we think? Read the owners manual or follow the sticker recommendations on the bike. No owner's manual? Find one and read it...
