I'm in with the second camp in that I don't believe that you'll be happy with a smaller machine.
It's a very personal and subjective decision though and the only way to know if it will work for you is to get one a try it. You'd probably be way ahead of the game if you could beg, borrow, or rent an under 50 and ride it around for an afternoon. Run it round in the terrain and the traffic you expect to normally travel in. Have the second person jump on and then see what you think.
You have the luxury of being in a metropolitan area with an active scooter community. You might as well make use of the options you have. The yellow pages might be your friend in this situation.

While I would certainly agree That a larger scooter is the "BETTER" choice overall,He has already stated that he would rather not go through all the beaurocracy to get one. What he is asking for is advice on 50 cc scooters And a large frame ,slightly modified 50 cc can certainly be capable of carrying 270 lbs around a metropolitain area with no problems. I see it often in northeastern cities. In fact, I ride one myself. I weigh 210 lbs, and It has plenty of power for me plus 50-60 lbs of food and gear on occasion. I don't see why a properly modded 50 wouldn't do the same for them

All good advice. Thanks, guys! I'll take all of that into consideration and I'll also check out that dealer in Brookline (thanks, sailracer!). I'll post any follow up questions as I look further into this.

Consider a 150 with dual rear shocks to carry 270+ lbs if you get a GY6 based scoot. The Piaggio based 49cc along with certain Honda and Yamaha will also be designed to carry over 270 lbs. rockynv, what do you mean by "GY6"?

The Chinese 49cc to 150cc Clones based on their version of the Honda GY6 engine. Many come with only 1 rear shock on the left side of the bike and have a very small carrying capacity of about 230 lbs while the Aprilia for example using the Piaggio engines generally have a 460+ lb passenger/cargo capacity. I had the Znen GY6 based 150cc Lance Vintage which had just a single shock in the back even though it was a fairly large 2 passenger bike. The 230 lb capacity caused it to bottom out stressing the shock mounts, frame and engine case when you hit bottom. I was seriously considering adding the right side swing arm extension and shock mount on the rear frame to add the second shock and spring however it was just cheaper for me in the long run to trade it in on a bike designed to carry more weight.

Thanks rockynv, I was actually already looking at the Buddys which have a 330lb capacity.

My Nieces Husband has had a Genuin Buddy for around 5 years now and is very pleased with it. It is a licensed copy of the Vespa and has been rock solid reliable. He rides it daily to commute to work here in Tampa Bay where our riding season is about 360 days a year.

The Tomos Twister 50 has a load capacity of 300 lbs as well as 16 inch wheels which make pot holes less of a problem. Good luck whatever your chosen ride and stay safe.

As long as the both of you are wearing helmets and eyewear, you're ok.
