I have a QMB139 GY6 retro Chinese scooter that has been problematic to say the least. Most recently I'm having trouble with the transmission..roller weights bad its eating belts i need a new clutch..etc basically I need to replace most of the CVT which I'm at 2500 miles so it is time. Has any ever thought of just using a chain attached to the rear wheel would this work with a centrifugal clutch how much mod would be required. I just thought of it while I was riding and decided to ask the question.

Here's a video of why the answer is no chain ever sorry

I have postulated about a chain-drive transmission before. I maintain it is 'do-able'. Whether it would be durable enough, or worth the effort remains to be seen, but the mechanics of such a conversion seem pretty straight forward.

As long as your ok with one gear its doable.

I see no reason why one could not have multiple gears. They already have the engineering figured out for bicycles...why not carry that knowledge over to a multi-gear chain drive on a scooter? The question is more a mater of whether or not it's worth the effort.

Yes they have the know how already and some rides do have it but the shifting is done with electric motors. I haven't seen anything like that on scooters with a manual shift to switch the chain to a smaller or bigger sprocket. Alleyoop

A bicycle chain drive works well for human power (less than 1 hp). Using the same system for over 5 hp will certainly cause issues. If its so simple and effective you have to wonder why it hasn't been done. I guess you should just do it since you seem to have it all figured out.
Usually the answer to "why don't they" whatever is because whatever your asking either didn't work well or was too expensive to produce.

Well there was a scooter produced by Geely with a 2 stroke motor that went through a chain drive, it had a poorly made motor and was pretty well limited to 30mph but it worked.

Would be interesting to see a NuVinci CVT hub used on a scooter with a chain drive. I just wonder what a gear ratio range of about 350% would translate to in speed. There would still need to be some sort of clutch involved on a gas powered scoot, I'm pretty sure only electrics can work in this sort of setup with no clutch. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NuVinci_Continuously_Variable_Transmission
