Looking for some good brands and types for future shopping reference, so would like to know what some of my fellow motorists are currently using, and/or wish they had.
my current protection:
stock alarm (no pager) chain and diskus padlock
what I want to upgrade to;
brake disc lock with alarm chain w/ u lock/alarm alarm w/ 2-way pager
Currently I'm using a short chain (didn't measure it) but on the one hand, it means less options/objects to chain onto.
I want as many alarms to go off as possible to deter a potential thief and also 2-3 alarms all going off at once versus only 1 alarm going off I bet will get some looks from people near by. so a lock that latches onto a chain easily that also has an alarm, like bully lock or something. The padlock I use is so short it takes an extra x amount of time to get both chain ends in the loop.
Then I want the brake disc lock with alarm so that they would have a harder time trying to move it.
I'm only worried about my bike when I take it out and park it without it chained, if there is no place to chain it to. When it's at home its locked up inside and secure, not outside.

I have a bicycle cable with regular padlocks. And a cycle cover. Of course, I also park in front of Panera's where there's lots of people around most of the time, so all I need is to discourage the "messers-with".
I have bought an alarm padlock and a heavier cable for if I ever park at a store or something. Haven't even put in the battery yet, though.

I currently have the stock scooter alarm and a front wheel lock.
I am installing an old Android cellphone on my scooter, wired with a battery to cigarette lighter adaptor and usb charging port plugged into that. If my scooter is stolen, I can use Android Device Manager to locate it on Google Maps, make the phone ring at full volume (an extra alarm), and possibly even snap a picture of the thief. You can purchase used Android phones cheap on Ebay or Craigslist, and get a cheap pre-paid no-contract plan.
I realize this may seem like overkill, but I plan on mounting the smartphone so that it can be used for GPS/mapping, MP3/internet-radio, etc. I've already run the 8' battery-to-cigarette-lighter adaptor from my battery to just under the helmet hook on the steering collumn. Still haven't mounted the smartphone yet, trying to decide on best positioning before I make any cuts into the body work on my scooter.
BTW- If there isn't already an app out there that can respond to motion detection and text you, I'll be writing one.

[replyingto=pmatulew]pmatulew[/replyingto]I am currently using a 6 foot long 9/16" steel cable (with kevlar reinforcing) lock on the front wheel and a second identical cable lock on the rear wheel. Both of these go around one of the posts holding up the roof of the carport at my apartment. i also have a disc brake lock on the front wheel. I have no alarms (people tend to ignore them due to the great number of false alarms) My last defense against loss is my $50.00 deductible insurance.

Thankfully I have a not only wonderful but hot apartment manager and she said I can keep my moped on the patio when I get it.
I'm going to buy a 5-gal bucket and the beefiest chain padlock I can find. I'm going to fill the bucket with cement mix and stick part of the chain in it and let it dry.
I'm going to buy a pager alarm lock and a couple of alarm cable locks.
I already plan on buying a cover to protect my moped during the riding months.
Since the moped will be sitting right outside my door, I'm going to buy a cheapie electric chainsaw and heavy gauge extension to sit just inside so it's ready to go o))

I don't use anything at the moment. I'm never far from the scooter though, my bedroom window is right above.

Here's what I use So far pretty effective. I also have a fenced in acre or so. Anywhere other than I home I have always just used the locks on the bike. Never had a bike stolen.

When I was looking for a used scooter there was always some poor guy posting about his stolen moped. A few I remember; guy got his stolen at a k-mart. Security footage showed a man lifting it into his van. Ive had 1 car stolen and one broken into that ended up in a knife chase. Both cars had no alarm, I learned my lesson, and every vehicle after had an alarm. When I was living in the Philippines known as one of the dangerous countries I never had it stolen but there were 2 times I saw vague signs of attempts. Dont matter which part of the world u live in, and ive lived in different parts, ive learned to prepare for the unexpected.

I find that a good quality chain, (together with this) really cuts down on potential theft attempts.
